Summary
  • Arafat Minhas was Pakistan's most economical bowler, returning 2/27 from 10 overs in Australia's innings of 231/9

  • Nathan Ellis was Australia's pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4 wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for 190

  • Shadab Khan top-scored for Pakistan with 71 off 104 balls, including three sixes, in a losing cause

Australia posted 231/9 in their 50 overs after being asked to bat first in the second ODI against Pakistan, with the top order making slow but steady progress on a sluggish surface.

Josh Inglis top-scored with 51 off 74 balls while Cameron Green contributed 53 off 92, the two providing the core of Australia's innings through patient accumulation. Matthew Renshaw added a busy 43 off 43 balls lower down the order, though the visitors were unable to accelerate significantly in the final stages.

For Pakistan, debutant left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas was the standout, returning figures of 2/27 from 10 economical overs, while Abrar Ahmed took 2/34 and Shaheen Shah Afridi closed well with 3/36 from his eight overs, all three Pakistan's most reliable with the ball on the day.

Chasing 232, Pakistan's innings unravelled from the very start as they lost opener Maaz Sadaqat for a second-ball duck, bowled by Nathan Ellis. Sahibzada Farhan fell cheaply, and the dangerous Babar Azam could only manage 16 before being trapped LBW by Ellis.

Muhammad Ghazi Ghouri provided some resistance with 37, but at 78/6, Pakistan were firmly on the back foot and the match was effectively done as a contest. The target of 232 always looked distant at a run rate of just over 4 runs per over as wickets tumbled at regular intervals against disciplined Australian bowling.

Matt Short proved particularly effective with the ball, snapping up 3 wickets for 36 runs off his 8 overs, while Ellis finished with 4 wickets to be the pick of Australia's attack.

The only bright spot for Pakistan came from Shadab Khan, who batted with admirable fight in a losing cause, top-scoring with 71 off 104 balls, an innings that included three sixes, adding crucial lower-order partnerships to at least give the chase some respectability.

However, it was never enough, as Pakistan were bowled out for 190 in 44 overs, falling 41 runs short. The result gives Australia a series lead heading into the third and final ODI, with Pakistan now requiring a win to level the series.
