Summary
  • Josh Hazlewood was left fuming after colliding with Taskin Ahmed and missing a potential return catch

  • Taskin was dismissed for one soon after, with Australia reducing Bangladesh to 39/9

  • Mitchell Starc took 6/12 as Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64.

Josh Hazlewood was visibly unhappy after an extraordinary on-field collision with Taskin Ahmed prevented the Australian pacer from completing a return catch during the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay on Saturday.

Bangladesh were already on the verge of being bowled out when the incident occurred in the 28th over. The visitors had slipped to 38 for eight, with Australia's fast bowlers tearing through their batting order.

Hazlewood banged one in short and Taskin attempted to pull the delivery. Instead of finding the gap, the Bangladesh batter got a top edge, sending the ball almost straight up.

Hazlewood immediately moved towards the ball and appeared well placed to complete the catch. Taskin, however, had other ideas. The Bangladesh batter left his crease and began running, apparently looking for a quick single.

As Hazlewood tracked the descending ball, Taskin's running path brought him directly into the bowler's path. The pair collided, disrupting Hazlewood's attempt to position himself underneath the ball. The chance went begging as the ball dropped harmlessly nearby.

Hazlewood immediately looked towards the square-leg umpire, appearing to question whether Taskin's movement had interfered with his attempt to take the catch. Cummins then crossed over to bowler's-end umpire Nitin Menon to discuss the incident.

The officials did not intervene, and play resumed without any additional penalty. Hazlewood, however, was clearly frustrated, with live coverage noting the Australian quick was "fuming" after the explanation from the umpires.

The incident came just after Hazlewood had added another wicket to Bangladesh's disastrous innings. He changed his angle and came around the wicket against Hasan Mahmud, finding the edge that was safely held by Nathan Lyon. Hasan departed for 10, leaving Bangladesh eight wickets down for 38.

Taskin's reprieve proved extremely brief.

Cummins took the ball soon afterwards and went short to Taskin, who again looked to attack. This time, the shot went high into the air, with Matt Renshaw positioning himself perfectly to take the catch.

Taskin was out for one, reducing Bangladesh to 39 for nine.

Australia still had to wait for the final wicket, as Bangladesh's last pair showed unexpected resistance and prolonged an innings that had otherwise collapsed in spectacular fashion.

Eventually, the inevitable arrived. Bangladesh were dismissed for 64 in just 34 overs, with Mitchell Starc producing the standout performance. The left-arm quick claimed six wickets for only 12 runs from his 10 overs, while Pat Cummins took two wickets and Hazlewood finished with one.
