India have received a positive sign ahead of Day 2, with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirming that the wicketkeeper-batter is expected to be fit to resume his innings after his injury scare on the opening day.

Pant was struck on the left wrist by Lahiru Kumara’s 133 kph short ball while attempting a pull shot and retired hurt on 3. However, Kotak said the move was precautionary, with the wicketkeeper-batter already padded up again before stumps and expected to resume his innings if required on Day 2.

Kuldeep Yadav’s absence has been clarified! India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has dismissed speculation over the spinner’s omission, insisting there was no “fake” illness involved and that Kuldeep was genuinely unwell with viral fever.

Kotak also confirmed that Kuldeep has recovered reasonably well from the viral infection but was not fit enough to be considered for the Colombo Test. India instead handed off-spinner Saransh Jain his debut, with the presence of several left-handers in Sri Lanka’s top order also influencing the selection call.

India ended Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in a strong position at 300/5, thanks largely to Devdutt Padikkal’s superb 117. After winning the toss and batting first, India lost wickets at regular intervals, while Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the forearm. Padikkal, however, held the innings together despite being dropped twice early on 0 and 1, registering his second Test century. Dhruv Jurel (7) and debutant Saransh Jain (4)** were unbeaten at stumps as India looked to build a big first-innings total on Day 2.
