  • This was India's biggest innings victory in Test Cricket

  • This match was not part of the WTC cycle

India pummeled Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh. While there was a huge contrast in the red-ball abilities of both teams still this win would still be termed special as it's India's biggest innings win in history.

While this one-off Test wasn't a part of the World Test Championship cycle and the win won't have any bearing on the standings, it could do a world of good for the confidence of the Indian Test team, which was going through a rough patch in the recent past.

After electing to bat first, India piled up a massive 564/8 on the board on the back of scintillating hundreds from Shubman Gill (126) and KL Rahul (100) and a classy 81 by Rishabh Pant. Afghanistan's pacer, Mohammad Saleem Safi, was the only shining light, who bagged a six-wicket haul in the first innings of the match.

In response, Afghanistan fell flat and were dismissed for a paltry 152 in the first innings after getting rattled by debutant Manav Suthar, who picked up a six-wicket haul to register the third-best figures by an Indian bowler on debut after Narendra Hirwani.

The Afghan Atalans were then forced to follow on by the hosts and were looking fine at one stage with 70/1. But when it looked like they were crawling back in the match with a small partnership, they ended up losing wickets in clusters to hand control of the match back to India.

The Afghan Atalans went from 70/1 to 98/5 and then eventually got wrapped up at 112. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav took four and three wickets each to wrap up things for India inside the third day of the match
