Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh resigned on “moral grounds” after the Bombay high court ordered a CBI probe into corruption allegations made against him by former Mumbai ­police commissioner Param Bir Singh. NCP’s Dilip Walse Patil has been named the new home minister. The Maharashtra government later moved the Supreme Court challenging the lower court’s order.

Twenty-three security personnel were killed and 33 injured on Saturday in one of the deadliest Maoist attacks in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. A CoBRA commando is missing, presumed to be abducted. Police said wounded troops were shot and hacked to death.

Amid a surge in Covid cases, the Indian Medical Association has suggested to the Centre that vaccination be allowed for all people above 18 years. The daily rise in new coronavirus infections remained above 90,000 for the third consecutive day on April 6, taking the nationwide tally of cases to over 1.26 crore.  (See Dr Harsh Vardhan interview)
