Sonia Gandhi Calls For Party Meeting To Finalise Strategy Ahead Of Monsoon Session

Congress parliamentary party leader, Sonia Gandhi, has called for a meeting on Tuesday to finalise the party’s strategy for the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. The session is expected to witness many confrontations between the opposition and the government. 

The Monsoon session, which was due to start on July 21 and continue till August 12, has been extended by a week by the government. The extension to August 21 indicates the heavy legislative agenda to be discussed, according to Reuters reports. 

The Congress meeting to discuss parliamentary strategy is expected to be attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, among others. It will be chaired by Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence, party sources told Reuters. 

Expected Discussions 

Among the many topics that the opposition is expected to bring to the discussion, the Pahalgam attack is likely to take centre stage. The Congress has been demanding a discussion on the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, as well as the diplomatic outreach following that. 

The opposition parties are also expected to demand more clarity on the role of US President Donald Trump during the escalation between India and Pakistan and the ceasefire call. 

According to Reuters, opposition parties are expected to raise strong concerns over the Election Commission's move to carry out a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Especially when opposition parties had approached the Supreme Court on the issue and the top court did not stay the process. 

The announcement of the longer session also indicates the many legislative plans and changes that the government intends to discuss. The government plans to bring in key legislations, including one to facilitate the entry of the private sector in the atomic energy domain. 

The government is planning to amend the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act and the Atomic Energy Act to implement the announcement in the Union Budget to open up the nuclear sector for private players, reported Reuters.
