Protesting Wrestlers Back At Jantar Mantar, DCW Chief Swati Maliwal Issues Notice To Delhi Police

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal has issued a notice to Delhi Police for allegedly failing to register an FIR in a sexual harassment case involving women wrestlers.

According to reports, wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, on their way to protest at Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief Brij Bhushan again.

In January, the country's top wrestlers had staged a three-day sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding that Brij Bhushan be removed and WFI be disbanded.

A month ago, the sidelined WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh appeared before the government-appointed oversight committee, which is investigating into sexual abuse allegations against him, and outrightly rejected all the charges.

A complaint has reportedly been filed with Delhi Commission for Women, too, with its chief Swati Maliwal saying on Twitter that "several women including a minor have alleged that the accused person has indulged in the crime of sexual harassment against them during his tenure at the helm of Wrestling Federation of India".

She said that the complaint was filed at Connaught Place Police Station two days ago, involving a minor, but till now the Delhi Police has not registered an FIR in the matter, which is against the law.

Meanwhile, wrestler Vinesh Phogat said that, "It's been 3 months, and we haven't got justice, that's why we are protesting again. We demand justice, FIR has not been registered yet. We are grateful that DCW is supporting us."

Issuing a notice to Delhi police, the commission has demanded a response within 48 hours. In response to the DCW notice, Delhi Police stated, "Seven complaints have been received so far, some from Delhi and some from elsewhere. All of the complaints are being investigated. After concrete evidence is discovered, an FIR will be filed."
