Opposition Congress party strongly criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government for “deafening silence” following the United States of America (USA) airstrikes on Iran. The party argued that US President Donald Trump’s decision to bomb Iran makes “mockery” of its own calls for peace talks. Congress has demanded that India pushes for immediate diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the crisis.

“The government of India must demonstrate greater moral courage than it has so far,” said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X. He accused the government of failing to condemn both the US bombing and what he called “Israel’s aggression and targeted assasinations”.

Ramesh also criticised the government for its silence on the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Palestinians in Gaza.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over the phone on Sunday. He expressed India’s “deep concern” over the conflict and called for the situation to be deescalated through “dialogue and diplomacy”.

The US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan have raised fears of a much larger escalation in the region.

Earlier in an article, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi had argued that India’s silence on the conflicts in West Asia was a “surrender of values” and an abandonment of its long held support for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
