Myanmar-Bangkok Earthquake: At Least 4 Dead In Myanmar, One In Bangkok Multiple Buildings Collapse, Thai Stock Exchange Closed

A strong earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, also affecting Bangkok, earthquake monitoring services said, Reuters reported.

There was no immediate comment from Myanmar on the extent of damage following the quake. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a magnitude of 7.7 and was epicentered at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

One particularly terrifying video shows the water of an infinity pool falling over the edge.

Multiple reports and videos showed that buildings and some under construction collapsed in the Thai capital city. As per Reuters, at least four people were found dead near a mosque in Taungnoo town in Myanmar. According to CNN, emergency services say 50 people were inside a building that collapsed in Chatuchak Park, Bangkok.

Thailand’s National Institute of Emergency Medicine has said that at least one person was killed after a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok collapsed after the city was rocked by a strong earthquake.

Dozens of workers have been rescued from under the rubble of the skyscraper, they added.

The National Institute for Emergency Medicine says 43 people remain trapped in the building and seven others are injured.

Stock Market Closed For The Day

The Stock Exchange of Thailand suspended all trading activities for the afternoon session on Friday.

"Following the earthquake incident, the Stock Exchange of Thailand hereby announces the immediate suspension of all trading activities," the bourse operator said on its website.

"The closure affects all markets, including SET, the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI), and the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX), for today's afternoon session."

PM Modi Expressed Concerns

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar.

"Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand," PM said.

Tremors of 4.0 magnitude on the Richter scale also hit East Garo Hills in Meghalaya, according to the National Center for Seismology, while Bangladesh felt a magnitude of 7.3.

No State Of Emergency Declared In Thailand

Following some earlier confusion over whether a state of emergency had been declared in the Thai capital, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the situation in Bangkok remains serious but no state of emergency had been declared.

The Thai civil aviation department said Bangkok's airports were operating normally.

Mandalay University, Major Hospital See Damage

Casualties were feared after a fire erupted at Mandalay University in Myanmar following the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Friday.

A video on social media also showed heavy damage at the University, sending locals into panic.

Meanwhile, a major hospital in the Myanmar capital Naypyidaw was a “mass casualty area" after the country was rocked by a huge earthquake, AFP quoted an official as saying.
