Summary
  • A 27-year-old suspect stabbed two worshippers, aged 75 and 51, at the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple in Edmonton on Friday morning.

  • The suspect had been released from an Alberta federal prison on August 20, 2026, but failed to report to his assigned halfway house.

  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned the appalling violence and thanked the Edmonton Police Service for their swift response.

A knife attacker injured two worshippers at the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple in northeast Edmonton at around 5 am on Friday, August 21, 2026. The two male worshippers sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. Both the 75-year-old and the 51-year-old victims remain in stable condition.

Quick-acting witnesses immediately detained the suspect. Police subsequently arrested the 27-year-old man inside the temple. The 30-year-old gurdwara was temporarily shut on Friday morning as police investigated.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned the violence in a post on X. "The attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton this morning is appalling. My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and the wider community that is shaken by this terrible event," Carney said. He added that no person should feel unsafe in their place of worship and thanked the Edmonton Police Service for their swift response.

The Temple Confrontation

The sequence of events began early Friday morning. Edmonton Police received a report at 4:49 am about a man walking through traffic on a nearby highway. Approximately 15 minutes later, authorities responded to reports of a stabbing at the religious complex.

The suspect entered the temple and attempted to force his way into the main prayer area. Staff members intercepted him. "This confrontation then escalated, and two male patrons of the Gurdwara were stabbed. Thankfully, quick-acting witnesses intervened and detained the man," Acting Inspector Eric Stewart said at a press conference, BBC reported.

The World Sikh Organisation stated that a copy of the Sikh scripture was desecrated during the attack. Police are currently investigating this allegation.

Profile of the Suspect

The attacker has a long criminal record. The 27-year-old suspect has a significant history of violent crimes stretching back to 2015.

Authorities released him from an Alberta federal prison on August 20, 2026. He had recently been incarcerated for committing aggravated assault and attacking a peace officer. The man then did not show up at his assigned halfway facility in Edmonton on the day preceding the attack.

Charges are currently pending against the suspect. Police are investigating whether hateful ideology motivated the stabbing.

National Security Concerns

Security fears are growing across the country. This stabbing occurred one week after police confirmed active investigations into threatening phone calls made to two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, located around two hours south of the Edmonton site. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas condemned the threats, describing them as "utterly disgusting" in a social media post. Farkas said gurdwaras are places of hospitality where everyone is welcome.

Danish Singh, President of the World Sikh Organisation, urged caution. "We are asking gurdwaras across Canada to review and strengthen their security procedures and to remain vigilant," Singh said in a statement quoted by CBC. He further said that they will not allow fear to dictate how Sikhs live in Canada.

Edmonton Police Chief Warren Driechel said broader geopolitical issues are at play. "I see the heightened geopolitical tensions and increasing polarisation around the world showing up locally...We cannot remain silent," Driechel said.

Vancouver Police and authorities across other Canadian municipalities are closely monitoring the environment. These departments are actively engaging with local Sikh communities to address immediate safety concerns.
