Kospi Crashes As China’s CXMT Threatens Chipmakers, Asian Markets Slide

Asian markets traded lower on Tuesday, led by a sharp sell-off in South Korean technology stocks as concerns over intensifying competition from Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) rattled investors. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi closed 5.46% lower at 6,035.35, after falling more than 7% during the session, as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix came under heavy selling pressure.

The sell-off reflected concerns that CXMT’s claimed advances in memory chip technology could challenge established players in a market benefiting from the artificial intelligence boom. However, the Chinese company’s claims have not been independently verified, and its ability to manufacture the technology at commercial scale remains uncertain.

Samsung Electronics fell 7.7%, while SK Hynix plunged 8.8%. Both companies are among the world’s leading memory chipmakers and have benefited from demand linked to AI infrastructure and data centres.

“The KOSPI’s intraday fall of over 7% reflects fears that Chinese competition could erode Korean chipmakers’ pricing power, alongside concerns about financing and returns on massive AI investments. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan’s warning about speculative investor behaviour and funding constraints added to the unease,” said Eshaan Lazarus, Founder & CEO, 021 Trade.

CXMT’s Technology Claim Triggers Chip Sell-Off

CXMT President Cao Kanyu said at an industry conference in Shanghai over the weekend that the company plans to introduce a new memory chip designed to deliver greater computing capacity within a smaller area. The product, intended for data centre servers, will use a so-called 4F² architecture and is expected to be introduced before the end of the year, according to remarks confirmed by a company spokesperson.

If successful, the technology could mark a significant milestone for CXMT, potentially putting it ahead of Samsung and SK Hynix in this area. The company’s progress is particularly significant given US sanctions restricting its access to advanced manufacturing equipment, including ASML Holding’s most sophisticated machines.

However, the technology still needs to demonstrate that it can be manufactured reliably and at scale. The uncertainty has not prevented investors from reassessing valuations across the semiconductor industry, particularly after a strong rally driven by AI-related demand.

“The sell-off is partly CXMT and partly positioning. CXMT says it has made progress on a denser 4F² memory design, with server chips due by year end. That hit Samsung and SK Hynix hard, and with those two making up roughly half of the KOSPI, the index fell about 5.5%. But the details are unverified, and analysts expect a gap before it reaches production. The size of the move reflects profit taking after a huge run in memory stocks and heavy foreign selling,” said Daniel Munday, Principal Analyst, VT Markets.

Rubina Singla, Founder of Equitrust, said the sell-off reflected a broader reassessment of the global AI and semiconductor trade rather than a single geopolitical shock. Rising competition from CXMT raised concerns about pricing power and market share for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, while doubts over returns on AI infrastructure spending and foreign selling intensified the decline.

Asian Markets Slide, While Indian Equities Rally

The weakness extended across most Asian markets, led by a sharp sell-off in technology stocks. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 2.5% to 67,292.39, with chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron falling 6.6%. SoftBank Group, an investor in OpenAI, lost 8%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1% to 24,033.51, while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.1% to 3,754.82. Taiwan’s Taiex dropped 1.9%, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) down 1.6%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.2% lower to 8,767.40.

Indian equities, however, moved in the opposite direction. The Sensex gained more than 1,100 points to settle at 73,033.78, while the Nifty 50 rose 1.60%, or 358.60 points, to 22,721.55. The gains came even as semiconductor stocks faced pressure across global markets.

The weakness in chip stocks also carried over from Wall Street. On Monday, Nvidia fell 1.3%, Advanced Micro Devices declined 2.3%, Micron Technology lost 3.9% and Broadcom dropped 1.9%.

The broader US market ended mixed, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.1%, the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.4%. Investors are also watching earnings from major US banks, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, this week.

Rising Yields, Oil Add To Investor Caution

Beyond the semiconductor sector, investors remain concerned about the cost of financing growth and the returns expected from large AI investments. US Treasury yields above 5% and Brent crude near $100 a barrel have added to valuation pressures, according to Munday.

Higher bond yields can make future earnings less attractive relative to safer assets, particularly for growth-oriented companies whose valuations depend heavily on expected profits in the coming years. Elevated oil prices can also intensify inflation concerns, complicating expectations for the US Federal Reserve’s policy path.

Munday noted that more than 40% of S&P 500 stocks were at least 20% below their highs, even as the benchmark remained near record levels, supported by a small group of major AI-linked companies. Such concentration could leave those stocks vulnerable if yields continue to rise.

What The Sell-Off Could Mean For India

The shift in global sentiment could have mixed implications for Indian markets. Foreign investors turning more cautious could intensify selling in emerging markets, although a broad-based Indian market may be less directly exposed to a concentrated sell-off in semiconductor stocks.

“China’s record in solar panels and lithium ion batteries is a case in point for how technological capability can be translated into manufacturing scale that is greater than the rest of the world put together. There is a fear that the same thing will happen in the memory chip space, although CXMT’s newly announced technology still needs to prove itself at volume,” Lazarus said.

“For India the implications are two sided. Global risk aversion could lead to foreign selling and a move away from the semiconductors could be favourable to the more broadly based Indian indices. Cheaper chips would help Indian electronics manufacturers but would also increase pressure on domestic chipmakers,” he added.

For Indian investors, Singla said the episode underlined the importance of diversifying across sectors, asset classes and geographies, while prioritising earnings quality over market narratives. She also advised investors against reacting to every bout of volatility, recommending continued systematic investment plan (SIP) contributions and periodic portfolio rebalancing.

Singla cited historical S&P 500 returns to illustrate the risks of market timing. According to the data she shared, the index delivered an annualised return of 8.45% between 1995 and 2025, which fell to 5.56% for investors who missed its 10 best-performing days.

For now, the key question is whether CXMT can translate its claimed technological progress into commercially viable production. Until then, the sell-off reflects both the threat of stronger Chinese competition and investor caution after a powerful AI-driven rally.
