Ohh My Dog Review | Amit Rai Delivers A Moving Thriller About Humanity's Most Loyal Companions

The saying goes that a dog is man's best friend. Ohh My Dog asks a far more difficult question: are human beings worthy of that friendship?

Writer-director Amit Rai, known for grounding social issues within accessible cinema, builds his latest film around an emotional premise that gradually transforms into a tense social thriller.

Rather than making another sentimental film about pets, Ohh My Dog uses the relationship between humans and animals to expose trafficking, corruption and the value of compassion in a society where both children and stray animals are often treated as disposable. It is an ambitious film that occasionally stumbles under its own melodrama, but its emotional sincerity never allows it to lose its heart.

The film opens with one of its strongest sequences. A police dog named Senapati is given a ceremonial farewell after dying in the line of duty. While the funeral itself is moving, what lingers is the grief of the officer mourning not simply a colleague but a companion who has left behind her own puppies. From its opening minutes, Amit Rai establishes that these animals are not side characters or emotional props. They are workers, protectors and family.

From there, the narrative splits into two parallel stories.

In Assam, young Apu (Maahi Rai) loses his beloved dog Momo under mysterious circumstances. While local authorities initially dismiss his fears, rumours surrounding dog trafficking slowly begin to emerge. Meanwhile in Bihar, daily wage worker Prince disappears without explanation.

His faithful dog Oscar refuses to believe his owner has simply vanished and begins following his scent across towns, eventually uncovering something far more sinister than anyone imagined.

The decision to tell these stories side by side becomes one of the screenplay's greatest strengths. Although the two narratives never directly intersect, they mirror one another remarkably well. In Assam, a child desperately searches for his dog. In Bihar, a dog desperately searches for his human. Together they underline a simple truth: loyalty is never a one-way relationship.

The comparison also allows Amit Rai to examine two different social realities. One explores illegal dog trafficking, while the other exposes organ trafficking and the exploitation of India's poorest labourers. Both stories ultimately ask the same question. Who protects those with the least power?

Much of that emotional weight rests on the performances.

Maahi Rai delivers an earnest debut as Apu. His performance occasionally leans towards heightened emotion, particularly during some of the more dramatic scenes, but his innocence makes the character immediately likeable.

His determination never feels manufactured. Whether he is tracking digital clues or refusing to give up on Momo, Apu becomes the emotional centre of the Assam storyline.

Bruno, who plays Oscar, steals the film.

Without speaking a single word, the dog conveys fear, determination, grief and unwavering loyalty through body language alone. Oscar's relentless search for Prince becomes one of the film's most compelling journeys. Amit Rai wisely never attempts to anthropomorphise him. Instead, Oscar behaves exactly like a loyal companion would, making his actions even more powerful.

The supporting cast remains consistently dependable. Pankaj Tripathi brings warmth and quiet authority to Prince's teacher, reminding audiences why educators often become pillars of struggling communities. Geeta Agarwal Sharma delivers a believable performance as Apu's anxious mother, while Pawan Malhotra lends dignity to one of the few honest police officers within the film.

Rajesh Kumar and Vijay Vidyadhar Mishra effectively represent the moral decay of a system where corruption frequently outweighs justice.

Technically, Ohh My Dog is strongest whenever it embraces suspense over sentimentality.

The sequences following Apu's digital investigation build genuine tension, particularly the beautifully staged stretch involving Assam's bamboo dance festival. The cinematography uses crowded public spaces and vibrant local culture not merely as visual spectacle but as part of the chase itself. The atmosphere constantly shifts between celebration and danger, keeping audiences invested without relying on excessive action.

The comparison between Assam and Bihar also feels carefully considered rather than forced. Different landscapes, cultures and social realities ultimately arrive at the same uncomfortable conclusion: exploitation wears different faces depending on geography, but its victims often remain the same.

There are moments, however, when the screenplay pushes emotion harder than necessary. Certain performances become theatrical, particularly during confrontational scenes, reducing some of the realism the film works so carefully to establish elsewhere.

The narrative also becomes fairly predictable once the trafficking networks are introduced, with several revelations arriving exactly when audiences expect them.

Even so, Rai's understands where the film's emotional power truly lies.

This is not simply a film about rescuing a missing dog. It is about survival itself. Prince fights desperately to stay alive after becoming trapped within an organ trafficking racket. Oscar refuses to abandon him. Apu refuses to stop searching for Momo. Every major character is driven by an unwavering belief that someone they love deserves another chance.

The naming of Apu also feels like a thoughtful nod towards Satyajit Ray, drawing subtle parallels between childhood innocence and resilience without becoming overly symbolic.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Ohh My Dog is that it never treats animals as lesser beings. Throughout the film, dogs are portrayed not merely as companions but as protectors, investigators and emotional equals. Human beings repeatedly fail one another through greed, corruption and indifference. Oscar never does.

Ohh My Dog may occasionally lean too heavily into melodrama, but its compassion remains genuine. Amit Rai delivers a family thriller that entertains while asking audiences to reconsider empathy itself. Long after the mystery concludes, it is not the villains or the conspiracies that remain memorable. It is the image of one loyal dog refusing to stop looking for the person who never stopped loving him.
