In one of the most intense escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran in several years, President Donald Trump on Sunday once again warned the Islamic Republic of repercussions if it was planning to carry out any attack on America.

Taking to Twitter, Trump wrote: "They attacked us, & we hit back. If they attack again, which I would strongly advise them not to do, we will hit them harder than they have ever been hit before!"

Minutes later, in a fresh tweet, the US president boasted of US's military might, saying, "We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World! If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way...and without hesitation!"

Trump has been actively putting out tweets, issuing warnings to Tehran, two days after a drone strike killed a top Iranian general in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the body of General Soleimani arrived on Sunday in Iran to throngs of mourners.

The conflict is rooted in Trump pulling out of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, an accord likely to further unravel as Tehran is expected to announce as early as Sunday it will break another set of limits.

Iran has promised "harsh revenge."

Already, a series of rockets launched in Baghdad late Saturday fell inside or near the Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies, including the US Embassy.

On Saturday, the President said that the US is targeting 52 sites in Iran and will hit them "very fast and very hard" if the Islamic republic attacks American personnel or assets.

US' action against Iran has prompted fears of a major conflagration in the Middle East.

Pro-Iran factions have also ramped up pressure on US installations across Iraq with missiles and warnings to Iraqi troops -- part of an outburst of fury over the killing of Soleimani, described as the second most-powerful man in Iran.
