ISL 2019-20, Match 17 Highlights: FC Goa Condemn Mumbai City To Another Defeat In Goal Fest

FC Goa showed why they are billed as one of the title contenders this season by dismantling Mumbai City in a six-goal thriller despite a slow start at Mumbai Football Arena. The hosts looked to match the defending runners-up by drawing the parity, twice. But the pure class from the visitors in the second half blew Jorge Costa's side. Final verdict, 4-2 in the favour of Sergio Lobera's side, with a certain Ferran Corominas scoring his sixth goal in seven outings against Mumbai. Poor finishes and poor defending, that's everything any opposition would want. And Mumbai handed those in a platter. The result means that Goa are now at the top of the table, courtesy their superior goal difference. Both Goa and NorthEast have eight points each from four matches each. Tomorrow, we have Kerala Blasters against Odisha FC. That's all for tonight.

Full-Time - Mumbai City 2-4 FC Goa

One quirky stat which tells Mumbai's inability to turn up against FC Goa is, out of the last 33 goals they have conceded 16 were against Goa. 16 vs Goa, 17 vs all others.

90+5' - With 4-2 lead, FC Goa happily roll the ball around. A rare back pass to Mohammad Nawaz. Then, a long ball. And still enjoying possession, before the final whistle.

90+2' - Sub for Goa, which is more of a time-killing mechanism. Princeton Rebello on for Brandon Fernandes. Meanwhile, the man of the match tonight is tireless Lenny Rodriguez.

89' - GOAL! Carlos Pena, what a goal. Faintest of touches to flick pass Amrinder Singh from the set-piece. Brilliant delivery from Edu Bedia, though. And four minutes added on.

87' - Pranjal Bhumij concedes a free-kick near the far flag. And yellow for the youngster for protestation.

86' - Ahmed Jahouh concedes a free-kick to Mumbai. He takes down Diego Carlos just outside the box. But a poor effort from the set-piece. Way over the bar.

83' - Mohamed Larbi in the thick of the action. Good chance for Mumbai to penetrate Goa defence, but cut short by a timely defensive work.

82' - Manvir Singh, who turned 24 yesterday, goes for the far post and he's unlucky. Just misses the target.

81' - Another corner for FC Goa. The visitors are having their best-attacking spell. Three corners in the last couple of minutes. But no goals to swell the lead.

80' - Manvir Singh pushes Souvik Chakraborty before going for a header and is cautioned. And another change for Mumbai. Bidyananda Ningthoujam in for Raynier Fernandes.

78' - Another late challenge. Ahmed Jahouh is in pain. Surchandra, who just arrived, lunges on FC Goa player, who was going for the goal. Deflection, and corner for Goa.

76' - Mandar Rao Dessai with a throw-in and Ferran Corominas almost wins a penalty. Then horror clearance from Souvik Chakraborty. Corner for Goa. Souvik header almost ends up inside his own goal.

75' - A foul on another FC Goa player. Then, sub for Goa. Jackichand Telem replaced by Manvir Singh, who salvaged a draw against NorthEast United with a very, very late header.

73' - What a delivery from Jackichand Telem to find Ahmed Jahouh. The Moroccan climbs tall for a header, but his timing for the jump undone the effort. Too early. And another change for Mumbai. Pranjal Bhumij in for Paulo Machado.

70' - Mumbai defender Souvik Chakraborty is losing the plot. Lucky to escape with a yellow card after bringing down Brandon Fernandes with a nasty challenge. Showing both the feet and very, very late.

68' - Sub for Mumbai. Bipin Thounaojam replaced by fellow Manipuri Surchandra, who joined the ISL outfit from Real Kashmir. Moments ago, Jackichand Telem win Goa a free-kick.

66'  - Poor effort from Bipin Thounaojam. After winning an individual battle, he sends in a cross. But too fickle.

63' - Mumbai almost hit back, but misses the target from the final attempt. And sub for Goa. Hugo Boumous can't walk. His replacement is Edu Bedia. Boumous is heavily strapped.

59' - And another GOAL! Ahmed Jahouh's delivery finds Mourtada Fall, who relays the ball in front of the goal. Hugo Boumous beats two defenders and heads home. In the follow-up, he crashes into the post and is injured.

57' - A late challenge from Diego Carlos and Lenny Rodriguez is in pain. It demands a yellow card. Free-kick to FC Goa.

55' - Goal! Souvik Chakraborty, back in the team after serving a suspension, drills through for the second equaliser. No chance for Mohammad Nawaz.

53' - Medical attention. Mohammad Nawaz is down after a collision with a Mumbai player. A very good spell for Mumbai.

49' - Goal! Good start from Mumbai. Sarthak Golui heads home with a well-directed header from a Mohamed Larbi corner. In the build-up the goal, Paulo Machado hits a long ranger to test Mohammaad Nawaz.

Clinical goals from Lenny Rodriguez and Ferran Corominas but poor, poor defending from Mumbai City. Subhashis Bose, who managed to keep dangerous Jackichand Telem quiet for the better part of the first half, failed to track when it mattered to allow Coro to score his sixth in seven games against Mumbai. Earlier, Lenny Rodriguez scored his first goal with a brilliant drill, beating a blind-sided Amrinder Singh. Mumbai, as expected, took control in the mid-field, but they don't have a Coro. Poor finishes, and only one on the target.

1st Half - Mumbai City 0-2 FC Goa

45+8' - And Goa continue to go for goals. Poor defensive work from Mumbai.

45+2' - GOAL! What a set-up. A falling Ferran Corominas strikes. Hugo Boumous beats Subhashis Bose with a brilliant pass and Jackichand Telem sets up Coro with a pin-point pass. The Spaniard does the rest. His sixth against Mumbai.

44' - But Goa look confident. Taking their time, rolling the ball. Then, suddenly Seriton Fernandes finds Hugo Boumous in the final third and win a corner. Another corner, on the opposite side. Two minutes added on.

43' - Mohamed Larbi finds Bipin Thounaojam, then the Manipur sends in a cross. Mumbai continue to press hard, with Pratik Chaudhury showing good skills on the ball from a rebound.

41' - Free run from Jackichand Telem, and he should have gone for the goal with that much space. And wastes it by delaying the release. Another good tackle from Subhashis Bose.

39' - Mumbai manage to create a move, but again fails to reach the final third.

38' - Majority of Goa's move have been started from the left flank but the final attack coming from the right. After a measured move, Hugo Boumous tries to find Ferran Corominas with a lofted pass, but fails.

36' - Subhashis Bose gets the battle against Jackichand Telem inside Mumbai box.

31' - Off-side against an FC Goa player and on a quick counter, Mumbai City test visiting goalie. Mohamed Larbi disappoints. Poor finish.

29' - Diego Carlos almost finds the equaliser within seconds. Hits the side-netting from close range.

27' - GOAL! Then, from the following play, Lenny Rodriguez drills through Mumbai defence and beats a blindsided Amrinder Singh. Good ball from Brandon Fernandes to set up the goal.

26' - Timely interception from Sarthak Golui to thwart Goa attack. Hugo Boumous and Jackichand Telem find enough room just outside the box, but Golui's there.

25' - Mandar Rao Dessai and Brandon Fernandes link up on the left flank and Goa no 10 tries to find Jackichand Telem with a cross-field ball. But fails. Way over the intended target.

23' - Ahmed Jahouh's long ball, but FG Goa fail to make the most out of it. They soon win the ball back and Ferran Corominas sends in a cross. It misses everyone.

22' - FC Goa enjoyed a good spell on the ball, then lost possession.

19' - Amine Chermiti gets tangled with Mourtada Fall in Goa's box while going for a header from a Bipin Thounaojam cross.

18' - Brilliant save from Amrinder Singh. Ahmed Jahouh goes for the goal from just inside the box. Mumbai captain dives to his right and blocks it. Corner for Goa. But poor delivery from the flag.

16' - Hugo Boumous, from a quick counter-attack, gets a sight on the goal. His left-footed attempt gets the block. Moments again, Mumbai got a very good chance. But misses the target from the final attempt.

15' - Good run from Bipin Thounaojam on the right and a teasing, low minus but an equally good block from a Mandar Rao Dessai, to concede another corner.

13' - Seriton Fernandes' flailing hand catches Diego Carlos on the floor and Mumbai player is down. No foul called, and one-ball to re-start.

12' - Jackichand Telem, on the right flank, keeps his calm and return the ball to his Goa team-mate. The visitors then create a move with Brandon Fernandes on the opposite flank. Huge call for a penalty inside the box with Hugo Boumous getting a rough challenge from Raynier Fernandes. Nothing from the referee.

9' - Ferran Corominas is on side but the linesman calls off-side. Poor from the officials, once again.

8' - Brandon Fernandes brings down Diego Carlos and a free-kick to Mumbai in their own half.

7' - Ambitious left-footed drive from Amine Chermiti. Misses the target by a mile.

6' - Good start from Mumbai. Win a throw and a free-kick in a dangerous area.

4' - First move from Mumbai. First corner to Mumbai, courtesy a Mourtada Fall clearance. Wasted chance. Targeting the far post, everybody misses the ball.

2' - Mumbai City sitting back, waiting for FC Goa to make the first move.

1' -Referee Umesh Bora blows the whistle. An early interception from Mumbai City. But FC Goa win back possession.

7:11 PM IST: Head-to-head record

In the 12 meetings, Mumbai have won four, to Goa's five with three draws. The head-to-head record may look deceptively close, but the two sides have vastly different scoring prowesses. Goa have pumped in 24 goals, to Mumbai's 10.

6:53 PM IST: Some good news for ISL. Former Chennaiyin forward John Stiven Mendoza, who rocked the inaugural season, has been in Colombia's 23-man squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Peru and Ecuador. Having signed for Chennaiyin as a 22-year-old, then an unknown player, Mendoza impressed with his pace, skills and finishing. He scored four goals in seven starts as Chennaiyin comfortably reached the play-offs. But Mendoza suffered an injury in the league stage and his absence played a big role in Chennaiyin losing out in the semis despite topping the table in the league stage. That cameo earned Mendoza a big-money move to Brazilian giants Corinthians.

During the pre-match press conference, Mumbai City coach Jorge Costa said that his side will need to avoid mistakes. "I spoke to the players after the defeat against Odisha FC. We've to fix our mistakes and we've to be focused to avoid these mistakes. In football, if you're overconfident then it's a problem. I'm not expecting an easy game. But, I'm sure FC Goa also aren't expecting an easy game. We respect them and they respect us," he said.

Meanwhile, FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera revealed that his side are ready to face Mumbai and are not overconfident. "I would prefer that my players remember the semi-final (5-1 win over Mumbai). I think every match is different. I think it is going to be a difficult match because we are going to play against a very good team and the past, I think, is not important for us," he said.

 6:12 PM IST: Team News

Mumbai are without Rowllin Borges. The midfielder is currently injured. Also, Modou Sougou will be absent, along with Mato Grgic. Meanwhile, the visitors have a fully-fit squad but Seminlen Doungel is suspended.

Injury-plagued Mumbai City host high-flying FC Goa in a highly-anticipated Indian Super League fixture. Out of their first three fixtures, the Islanders have won one, drawn one and lost a fixture. Meanwhile, the Gaurs have registered a victory, coupled with two draws.

Mumbai faced Goa on four occasions last season, including a two-legged play-off for a spot in the final. Goa defeated Mumbai on three occasions, scoring 12 goals in the process. The lone win (1-0) for Mumbai came in the second leg of the play-off after Goa had won the first leg 5-1.

Though Mumbai are known to sit back and stay organised, they have always struggled against the fast attacking opponents, and Goa are famous for it.

However, the Gaurs aren't exactly at their best this season. After a 3-0 win over Chennaiyin FC, they followed it up with hard-fought draws against Bengaluru FC and NorthEast United.
