The Tamil Nadu Government today decided to drop the cases against two Union Ministers Murasoli Maran and T.R. Baalu.
Though the cases had been filed against them on explicit charges, the Government has decided to drop the cases for maintaining
'cordial relationship' between the Centre and the state, official sources said. The sources said the Centre had 'informally' conveyed to the State Government that it was not in the best interest of cordial relationship between the Centre and states to file cases against the Union Ministers.
They said the Ministers, who were released yesterday by a court, had refused to come out of custody. Maran refused to leave Apollo Hospital and the police guard posted there was removed last night itself.
Baalu was informed about his release by the Jail Superintendent, Vellore Central Prisons, but he also refused to come out of the prison. Besides, the Vellore district collector also personally informed him about his release.
The Ministers were arrested on June 30 for specific and explicit offences, under various sections of IPC, including obstructing the police officials from discharing their duty during the arrest of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, they added.
