The Centre has banned the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items, including candy sticks and cutlery, from July 1, 2022. The thickness of plastic carry bags will also be increased to allow reuse. Scientists say only 9 per cent of the plastic ever produced has been recycled—the rest is buried, burned or dumped into oceans.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing more than 1,400 people. It nearly razed some towns and triggered landslides that hampered rescue efforts in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti already was struggling with Covid, gang violence, worsening poverty and uncertainty following the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

The Supreme Court doesn’t want the government to disclose anything that compromises national security vis-à-vis pleas seeking an independent investigation into the Pegasus row. The Centre said in the top court that giving out information on such spyware may allow enemies of the nation to take pre-emptive/corrective steps.
