Bangladesh started the day at 98/4 in Durban. The visitors lost nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed early but Liton Das and Mahmudul Hasan Joy ensured that there were no further setbacks with an 80-plus stand for the fifth wicket in the first session. Bangladesh lost Liton early after lunch but Joy stood like a rock at the other end negating the South African bowlers with his calm and composed batting. The right-hander put on valuable partnerships with Yasir Ali, Mehidy Hasan and Khaled Ahmed to take the team closer to 300-mark. Bangladesh finished at 298 with Joy being the last man to be dismissed at 137. He also became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test ton against South Africa. "There is still a long way to go and it won't be right to predict anything. Test cricket is like this and those who will play well will win but we still have a chance. There is Joy, Liton, Rabbi and me and we will try to see how far we can go," Mehidy told reporters at the end of Day 2.
Simon Harmer has made a fantastic return to Test cricket. His last Test was in 2015 and he had taken 491 wickets after that before he was called up to play the Durban Test. Apart from taking a four-for, the 33-year-old Harmer made his highest Test score of 38 not out as the South African tailenders added valuable runs to see South Africa post 367 all out in their first innings.
Young opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy will be Bangladesh's main hope today. He is batting on an unbeaten 44 with nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed, who has so far gone wicketless in this Test. Bangladesh still have a lot of batting to come with in-form Litton Das, Yasir Ali and the talented Mehidy Hasan Miraz all capable to batting well. SA will look for breakthroughs in the opening session.
