IFFI itself still resembles a severely scratched Super 8 reel: bloated in places, uneven and a structurally flawed “hot, wet mess”. Yet, it has enduring value as a space of sometimes insane cultural and geographical diversity in one of the best possible settings.

Despite the festival’s light-hearted atmosphere and its scenes of camaraderie and celebration, a shared sense of crisis reverberated across both the international and regional film selections. War, authoritarianism, and the trauma of history formed a common thread.
