“Varun couldn’t make weight as he was declared unfit by the doctor,” the source told The Indian Express. The source added that Sanyal’s medical reports indicated that he had suffered from muscle cramps and dehydration during the weight-cutting process.
Sanyal, the son of Sanjiv Sanyal, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, had been attempting to reduce his weight ahead of Sunday’s competition. His weight cut reportedly took a concerning turn when he passed out while using a sauna aboard a cruise ship and was subsequently taken to hospital.
MMA Sports Federation of India president Nikhil Kundera told PTI that Sanyal’s condition was not a major cause for concern and that he was later brought back to the cruise.
“There was not much to be worried about, so he was brought back to the cruise around 3:00am. He is now stable and out of trouble,” Kundera told PTI.
A medical document accessed by The Indian Express reportedly provides further details about Sanyal’s condition. According to the newspaper, the document recorded that he experienced dizziness and lightheadedness after using a sauna as part of his weight-loss efforts.
The document, translated from Japanese, stated that Sanyal experienced “dizziness, lightheadedness, and muscle cramps 30 minutes after taking a sauna” while restricting food and fluid intake to lose weight.
Sanyal was a late addition to India’s MMA contingent and was one of two fighters representing the country at the Asian Games. His withdrawal means he will not compete in the men’s traditional 77kg event.

There was better news for India in the women’s competition, with Suchika Tariyal advancing to the semifinals of the traditional 60kg category after winning her quarterfinal. Her victory also secured a medal for India.
