Summary
  • India must beat Argentina to keep their semifinal hopes alive

  • Goal difference could prove crucial in the race for the remaining semifinal spot

  • Netherlands vs England will also impact India’s qualification scenario

India’s route to the semifinals of the 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cup is still open, but Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates now need a lot more than just a win. The 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands left India with no room for error and pushed their qualification hopes into a complicated goal-difference battle.

Argentina’s 3-1 win over England, however, ensured that India remain mathematically alive heading into the final round of Pool E matches.

What India Need To Reach The Hockey World Cup Semifinals

The latest results have created a three-way battle for the second semifinal spot. The Netherlands are already through after winning their first two Pool E matches and sit on six points. India and Argentina have three points each, while England remain on three points following their defeat to Argentina, meaning all three teams are still in contention for the remaining place.

India's first task is to must beat Argentina in their final Pool E match on Monday. However, a narrow victory may not be enough. India currently have a goal difference of zero after their carried-over result and the defeat to the Netherlands, while the qualification calculations could come down to goals scored and goal difference depending on England's result.

The other match is equally important. India will also need the Netherlands to beat England. According to the latest qualification permutations, the simplest equation for India is to beat Argentina by at least two goals and hope the Netherlands defeat England by three goals or more. Those results would significantly improve India's goal-difference position in the three-way race for the second semifinal berth.

If the margins are smaller, the calculations become more complicated and goals scored could enter the equation. That means India cannot simply focus on securing three points against Argentina. Every goal could prove crucial. A draw or defeat against Argentina would end their semifinal hopes, while an England win or draw against the Netherlands would also make India's task significantly more difficult.

How India Reached This Situation

India entered the second round after finishing second in Pool D, carrying forward their victory over Pakistan but also their defeat to England. In Pool E, they then faced the Netherlands in a match that had major implications for the semifinal race.

The Dutch proved too strong, winning 3-1. Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers and Thijs van Dam scored for the Netherlands, while Harmanpreet Singh pulled one back from a penalty corner. The defeat left India under pressure and dependent on results elsewhere.

Argentina then beat England 3-1, which kept India’s campaign alive and prevented England from moving further ahead. The final Pool E fixtures, India vs Argentina and Netherlands vs England, will now decide who joins the already-qualified Netherlands in the semifinals. India’s equation is difficult, but after Argentina’s win, the door remains open.
