Google's Year In Search 2023, Sports: Shubman Gill Makes Top 10; Damar Hamlin Beats Kylian Mbappe As Most-Searched Athlete

American Football superstar Damar Hamlin was the most-searched athlete on Google in 2023, ahead of France and Paris Saint-Germain soccer sensation Kylian Mbappe. Shubman Gill, meanwhile, made the top ten list globally

Budding Indian cricket megastar Shubman Gill was among the most-searched athletes in the year 2023, Google has revealed as part of their year-end 'Google's Year in Search' process. Gill came in at ninth, a spot ahead of popular NBA figure, Kyrie Irving. (Cricket News)

Gill's splendid year began with him opening for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League and helping them reach the final for a second year in a row. The youngster closed his year by assuming the captaincy of the Titans while also helping India reach the final of the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. By the end of 2023, Gill was the best-ranked ODI batter among his peers, ahead of giants of the game Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, and others.

Gill was not the only cricketer present on the year-end list; New Zealand's 24-year-old prodigy Rachin Ravindra made the cut ahead of the Indian batter, coming in at number eight. Ravindra broke into the limelight in the ODI World Cup, where his masterful displays helped New Zealand reach the semi-final.

Topping the list, though, was American Football star Damar Hamlin, whose early-year affliction was among the most-searched topics on the web engine. Just two days into 2023, the Buffalo Bills safety suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin was resuscitated on the pitch and transferred to a hospital before but later made a full recovery.

Hamlin pipped Kylian Mbappe for the top spot on the list, with the latter one of two Association Football stars featured in the top ten alongside Harry Kane. Both individuals were of significant interest to the football fraternity due to the incessant rumours of them being on the move. While Mbappe, whose constant links to Real Madrid never seem to die down, stayed put at Paris Saint-Germain, Kane traded boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur for German giants Bayern Munich.

In at number three in the most-search list was American Football's Travis Kelce, whose later-year relationship with pop-singer Taylor Swift thrust him firmly into the spotlight. Tennis pros Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz also made the charts, the pair squaring up against each other in tournaments all year round.

Here is the complete list of Google's Year in Search 2023, Top Ten most-searched Athletes:
