Turkmenistan have faced Oman five times. Oman have won four times, while Turkmenistan have won just once. None of the matches have ended in draws.
In the last outing between the two sides in CAFA Nations Cup 2023, Oman won 2-0 against Turkmenistan.
In case you missed it, India qualified for the third-placed playoff match after finishing second in Group B following their 0-0 draw against Afghanistan. The referee blows his whistle, and Turkmenistan get today's match underway! It's a must-win clash for both, and the Greens are showing immense attacking intensity from get go.
Both teams are aware of the magnitude of the occassion. Turkmenistan had more of the ball in the early moments, trying to patiently build with short passes. Oman, on the other hand, are trying to hit them with through balls to beat their high backline. However, the match is yet to produce any chances so far.
What a bizarre set of events. Oman took a corner in the 12th minute, with Al Yahmadi have a shot from outside the box that was flicked goalwards by Al Subhi. Rustem made a complete mess of it, grabbing the ball but then spilling it under no pressure.
Since there's no goalline technology, the match went on. In the next pause in play, the referee went to the pitchside monitor, and after checking the replays, awarded the goal to Oman.
Correction: The goal has been 'awarded' as an own goal to the goalkeeper, Rustem Ahallyyev. Not one he would have wanted.
Al Subhi could have doubled Oman lead. A cross into the box found him with the goalkeeper to beat, but his powerful strike rattled against the crossbar and ricocheted back, and the rebound is high and wide.
After a period of sustained Omani pressure in their half, Turkmenistan are trying hard to move forward down the flanks. They know the importance of the equaliser - anything short of a win and they are on the first flight home.
A strong tackle from Tayjanov on Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri saw the referee branding the first yellow of the game. The Omani player is down on the deck and receives some treatment, but is okay to continue. Oman almots catch Turkmenistan by surprise with a quick free kick, but Rustem collects the ball.
How did that no go in?! Wonderful play from Oman in the box, with Al Yahmadi playing Al Rawahi through. The winger took the ball and went around Rustem, trying to roll the ball into an empty net. However, a David Luis-esque sliding challenge from Arzuvguly somehow keeps the ball out and sends it wide.
Turkmenistan immediately counter, but Myratberdiyev's shot is wide of the far post.
The fourth official indicates a minimum of four added minutes to be played. Both sides are pushing hard to score the second goal, but the quality is missing in the final third.
Despite a late push from Oman, Turkmenistan defend well and survive to battle in the second half, with the goal deficit still standing at just one. A big 45 minutes ahead in the context of the group and the tournament knockout stages. At half-time, it's Oman one, Turkmenistan nil.
The referee blows his whistle, and the second half is underway. A double change from both sides at the break as far as I can see. Velmyrat Ballakov and Shamammed Khydyrov comes on for Turkmenistan; Zhumaev and Saparmammedow are out. Not sure who came on for Oman, though. Ok, it's number 20, Salaah Al Yahyaei.
What a thunder strike! Ballakov, who came on the pitch just six minutes ago, receives a terrific cross from the left flank by Arzuvguly. The ball is a bit heavy and evades everyone in the box but reaches the winger, and he shoots with his right from 20 yards out that hits the top bar and crashes into the back of the net. Nothing Al Balushi could have done about it. Turkmenistan are level.
Oman are creating a number of chances, but their forwards have disappointed so far. A cut back into the box left an Omani player with an empty net in front of him, but the shot was wide of the far post. The head coach will not like this at all if they are to progress to the finals.
Most of Oman's attacks are coming down the right flank. The ball is floated on into the box from a corner, and Al Khamisi gets a header on that Turkmenistan fail to clear. In the chaos, Basimov goes down in a heap, and the referee blows for a foul.
What a save from Rustem! Oman are dominating the ball in Turkmenistan's half, and an Omani player takes a first time shot from just outside the box. It was dipping under the bar, and the goalkeeper was at full stretch to tip it behind.
Rustem, take a bow. After his howler handed Oman the lead, the goalkeeper has been Turkmenistan's best player by a mile. Another stunning save to keep a close-range header from Al Ghassani out. A brilliant save, more so under such pressure.
The fourth official indicates a minimum of six minutes to be played at the end of the ninety minutes. It's wave after wave of Omani attack, and it remains to be seen whether Turkmenistan can hold firm as they have done so far.
Heartbreak, pure heartbreak! Annadurdiyev has a shot at goal for Turkmenistan that the goalkeeper did very well to get hold of. Oman immediately break forward, with Al Ghassani running down the left flank with two players in the middle. Instead of crossing, he has a low shot towards the far post, and it evades Rustem and finds the back of the net.
What drama at the very end! Turkmenistan, after going down due to Rustem's error, fought back valiantly against an Oman side 61 points ahead of them in FIFA rankings. At the end, though, their attacking firepower was just too strong, resulting in the last-minute goal. Oman retain their spot in the Group A top. On to the Uzbekistan vs Kyrgyzstan match now.
