Good evening, football fans! This is the start of our live blog covering the biggest fixture in Indian football – the Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal! Stay tuned for pre-match updates and line-ups as they are released.
Fixture: Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal
Series: Indian Super League 2025-26
Venue: Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata
Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026
Time: 7:30 PM IST

East Bengal currently holds the upper hand in the title race due to a vastly superior goal difference (+18 to Mohun Bagan's +13).
If East Bengal Win: They move to 25 points, opening a 3-point gap over Mohun Bagan with just one match left. Because of the head-to-head advantage and goal difference, a win almost guarantees them the title, requiring only a point or a steady final matchday against Inter Kashi to seal it.
If they Draw: East Bengal retains the top spot. A draw keeps them firmly in the driver's seat; they would just need to defeat Inter Kashi on the final matchday to lift the trophy.
If they Lose: They fall 3 points behind Mohun Bagan and lose control of their destiny, needing a massive favor from SC Delhi on the final matchday.
For the reigning champions, the defending equation is straightforward but leaves zero room for error.
If Mohun Bagan Win: They take a 3-point lead at the top of the table (25 points) and break East Bengal's goal-difference advantage via the head-to-head rule. A win here means they just need to beat SC Delhi in their final game to retain their ISL crown.
If they Draw or Lose: Failing to win the derby severely damages their title hopes. They would drop behind or stay equal to East Bengal on points but trail significantly on goal difference. They would then be forced to rely on Inter Kashi taking points off East Bengal in the final week of the season.

The match is underway. Mohun Bagan are in their signature green and maroon home kit attacking from the left to right side. East Bengal are in their heritage red and cold jersey building from right to left. Both side look to start in an intense manner.
End to end stuff in the first ten minutes. Mohun Bagan throw the first punch with Sahal Samad mis-trapping a cut back from the left side. Tom Aldred, Manvir Singh and Abhishek Singh also got chances. Meanwhile East Bengal went in behind but Vishnu's poor touch helped MBSG defenders clear it easily.
A big chance for East Bengal but they fail to open the scoring. A miscued backheel from a Mohun Bagan midfielder lands the ball in the feet of Sojberg. He shoots with his left foot, the ball takes a deflection and hits the post. Mohun Bagan comes out with another attack this time Liston dribbling past two defenders to put in a cross. But there was no one in the box to meet it.
It has been an intense game so far with stakes very high. Bipin Singh got the biggest of them all. Was released in behind by Jeakson Singh and he was One V One with the goalkeeper. But he delayed, trying to ensure the goal and Alberto covered enough ground to block it. MBSG tried to hit back with a long ranger by Thapa but it was well saved by Gill.
Both sides get two chances from which they could convert. But none of them landed in goal. Miguel Figueira released Sojberg in behind, but he delayed his shot giving Vishal Keith enough to come out and close the angle to deny him. Meanwhile, MBSG won the ball high up the pitch and Manvir Singh's left-footed shot from close range got blocked. Match stays well poised here.
End of first half, but nothing to separate the two sides. Both teams created chances, with East Bengal being more penetrative, but hesitance costed them and they couldn't gain a healthy lead. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan has been probing and consistent with their build ups, although resilient defence from East Bengal prevented any slip up. The match is poised for the second half.
Mohun Bagan start the second half with bite. They build attacks from both sides and show the urgency to score. Abhishek Singh entered from the right side and took a sigh at the first post, although Prabsukhan Gill successfully thwarted the threat. Pressure is on both sides to make a break here.
Both teams have stepped up their game in the second half and are attacking each other's goals intensely. Liston Colaco took a solid free kick which took a deflection off the wall and missed narrowly. Meanwhile, East Bengal brought in attacks from both sides but failed to open to the goal and convert. The intent is visible from both sides.
East Bengal pepper the Mohun Bagan defence with back-to-back attacks. Miguel Figueira dribbled past the defence line twice but failed to find the back of the net. Rashid's shot was blocked too. Jeakson Singh receives another loose ball but this time, his attempt goes over the bar. A phase of pressure for Mohun Bagan.
In a massive tactical shake-up, Mohun Bagan Super Giant executed a quad-substitution that saw forward Jason Cummings, midfielder Deepak Tangri, winger Robinho, and defender Mehtab Singh all introduced into the match, replacing Alberto Rodríguez, Lalengmawia Ralte, Tom Aldred, and Manvir Singh respectively.
Goal!!! Edmund Lalrindika scores and puts East Bengal in front. A massive goal and potentially a title decider. Like many times in the time, Miguel Figueira puts in a through ball to Edmund to the right and the striker finishes the ball with a shot across the goal. Gets booked by opening the jersey during celebration. Meanwhile, the EB gallery goes wild.
Jason Cummings changes the scenario with an immediate response. What drama! Petratos takes a sharp curling corner and Jason Cummings runs in front of the first post to flick the ball home. A terrific goal from a technically solid striker and he makes sure the league goes to the last matchday.
Lots of drama in the final minutes. Jason Cummings puts in a brilliant cross and Jamie McLaren almost knocks the ball home to seal the win. But Prabhsukhan Gill arrives as the saviour as he denies McLaren. East Bengal try to build another attack but a fight for possession gets Edmund Lalrindika a red card. Mohun Bagan almost reaches the goal again but even in their last attempt they fail to convert. Both teams share points and go into the final matchday with East Bengal in advantage in terms of goal difference.
The dramatic 1-1 draw in the Kolkata Derby on May 17, 2026, has blown the ISL 2025–26 championship race wide open. With this season operating under a unique, shortened single-leg round-robin format and completely omitting the postseason playoffs, the table-topper at the end of 13 matches will be crowned the outright champions.
The single point gained by both Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC has resulted in an unprecedented logjam at the top of the table.
Because of the draw, neither Kolkata giant was able to break away from the pack. Heading into the final game of the season, five different teams still mathematically have a shot at the crown, but the advantage remains in the hands of the Kolkata clubs due to their goal difference.
Following the 1-1 derby draw, East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG are tied at the top with 23 points each, meaning a final-matchday victory for East Bengal over Inter Kashi will likely secure them the ISL title due to their commanding +5 goal-difference advantage over the Mariners. Mohun Bagan must defeat SC Delhi and hope East Bengal drops points—or somehow overturn that massive goal-difference deficit—while Bengaluru FC is effectively eliminated having already played all their matches. Meanwhile, dark horses Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC sit just one point behind at 22 points, retaining a slim, mathematical hope of stealing the championship if both Kolkata giants sensationally lose their final games and either chasing side secures a win.
