Summary
  • Despite qualification, Indian Football team is not eligible to participate in the Asian Games 2026.

  • According to the policies, only Indian teams ranked in top eight in Asia are eligible to secure qualification for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games 2026.

  • This is not the first time India is witnessing such thing, the same took place way back during the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

Indian football has suffered a significant blow, with both the men’s and women’s national teams ruled out of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Despite both squads earning their spots through qualification on merit, they will not compete in the continental multi-sport event—scheduled for September 19 to October 4—due to their failure to meet the specific eligibility criteria mandated by the Government of India.

The news has once again reignited the debate around the sports ministry of India and their selection policy who favor ranking over qualification in team events.

Why Were India's Football Teams Excluded?

The exclusion stems from a long-standing policy enforced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The government requires team sports to meet a specific ranking threshold to participate in multi-sport events, a metric that currently supersedes qualification through sporting merit.

This policy mandates that national teams in sports like football must be ranked among the top eight in Asia to receive government clearance for participation in multi-sport events like the Asian Games. Currently, the Indian men's team sits 26th in Asia (138th globally), and the women's team is ranked 13th in Asia, both falling well outside the ministry's required threshold.

While this "top-eight" rule had previously led to similar exclusion threats for the 2018 and 2023 Asian Games, the government had provided last-minute relaxations in 2023 to allow participation; however, no such intervention occurred for the 2026 edition, and both teams have since been replaced in the tournament draws.

How Did India Qualify?

India’s qualification for the 2026 Asian Games football tournaments was based strictly on performance within AFC competitions. For the men’s event, 15 of the 16 teams that qualified for the 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup earned their spots, while the women’s competition included 11 of the 12 participants from the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Although Australia competed in both tournaments, they were ineligible for the Asian Games as they are not a member of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). While the Indian men’s and women’s teams successfully navigated these rigorous qualification pathways and met all sporting criteria, their participation was ultimately blocked because the teams failed to satisfy the Government of India’s mandatory ranking benchmark for multi-sport events.

How History Repeats Itself?

The exclusion of the Indian men’s and women’s football teams from the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games marks the continuation of a recurring administrative hurdle, though this instance appears significantly more final than previous years. A similar trend of exclusion occurred ahead of the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, where the teams were sidelined despite their efforts. While a parallel situation arose before the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, the Sports Ministry intervened with a last-minute policy relaxation, ultimately greenlighting their participation.

However, history is unlikely to repeat itself this time; with the official football draws for the 2026 Games already held in July, reports indicate that replacement teams have been finalized and integrated into the tournament structure. This definitive move suggests that, unlike in 2023, there will be no eleventh-hour reversal, cementing the absence of Indian football from this year's continental stage.

AIFF's Reaction To The Situation

Explaining about the situation, M. Satyanarayan said that they had no control over the government's selection criteria.

"There are some rules of the government based on which they depute teams for the Asian Games. We have 40 national federations, not all of them send teams. In football, we are not among the top eight in Asia."

The statement reflects the federation's acceptance that qualification alone is insufficient under the existing policy.

An Interruption To The Rich Legacy

India has a profound football history at the Asian Games:

The men's team won:

  • Gold – New Delhi 1951

  • Gold – Jakarta 1962

  • Bronze – Bangkok 1970

Since then, however, India's performances have steadily declined on the continental stage.

The women's team has participated only three times, finishing:

  • 8th – Bangkok 1998

  • 9th – Incheon 2014

  • 13th – Hangzhou 2023

Ironically, the Women's team faces utmost disappointment after recently lifting the SAFF Women's Championship title, while both squads had earned their Asian Games place through strong performances in the AFC competitions.

Despite qualification, Indian Football will again have to watch the tournament from home after failing the ranking requirements and the long-standing conflict of the Indian Football with the administrative policies continue to shape Indian Football's participation in major sporting-events.
