Germany face Curacao in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E opener at Houston Stadium on Sunday, 14 June, with the four-time champions looking to begin their campaign on a winning note.
While Julian Nagelsmann’s side arrive as clear favourites after a run of nine straight victories, they will be eager to erase memories of back-to-back group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022. Curacao, meanwhile, are set for a historic first-ever World Cup appearance and will look to challenge Germany without pressure under veteran coach Dick Advocaat.
And we're off. Curacao getting things rolling, the tempo's up right from the start. Let's see what they've got in store for us today.
And just like that, Germany strike. Musiala gets a sight of goal but Obispo's there to block it, only Germany don't panic, they work it back, recycle it nicely, and Wirtz slides that perfect weighted pass into Nmecha's path. Curls it first-time, no messing about, right into the far corner. Clinical. Germany's ahead, 1-0, and Curacao's got to figure out what went wrong already.
Curacao get a free-kick right in the middle of the park, decent opportunity to push forward, but they go backwards instead. Safe play, keep it tight, you can see what they're doing. But if they keep passing up chances like this, they're not going to trouble Germany much. They need to be bolder, go after it.
And they're level. Curacao strike back! Locadia's effort gets blocked, ball's still loose, and Comenencia's onto it. Left foot, strikes it clean, takes a deflection off Kimmich and Neuer can't keep it out. Back of the net. Their first-ever World Cup goal and they're right back in this. 1-1. That's some response.
Germany keep pressing after the corner. Sane's got Obispo under pressure down the right, testing him, but the Curacao defender reads it perfectly, times a risky tackle beautifully and cuts it out. Another corner for Germany follows but they can't make anything stick from it. Curacao holding their shape well here.
Sane's played through the middle far too easily, he's clear on goal, looks like 2-1's coming, but Fonville's there! Slides in at the last second and throws his body in front of it. Brilliant block, stops it dead. That was dangerous, Germany almost had it.
Germany back in front. Brown swings the corner in from the right and Schlotterbeck's at the front post unmarked. Too easy. He's been a handful from set-pieces all match and he gets across far too easily, heads it past Room to the left. Simple finish. 2-1 Germany. Curacao's defense got caught napping there.
And here's the thing, Schlotterbeck's the first German defender to score at the World Cup since Hummels put one past France back in 2014. Not a bad way to break that streak. His set-piece threat's been real all game and he's delivered when it mattered.
Chong turns Tah and feeds Comenencia, who takes a touch, slows things down. Eventually Hansen gets a sight of goal but it's weak, straight at Neuer. Nothing doing there. Curacao can't quite find that cutting edge they need before the break.
And it's 3-1. Havertz steps up for the penalty and he's ice cold. Slots it low into the bottom left, Room's already committed the wrong way. Clinical. That's a big, big task for Curacao now going into the second half. Germany's put daylight between them.
Germany 3-1 Curacao. Schlotterbeck and Havertz have done the damage, with Comenencia's deflection keeping Curacao in it for a while. But Die Mannschaft's clinical finishing and their set-piece dominance has pulled them clear. Curacao showed fight, got a goal back, but they're chasing now. A lot of work to do in the second half if they want to make this interesting.
Bavaria's connection paying off. Kimmich slides it perfectly into the right side of the box, Musiala's there waiting and he picks out the bottom-left corner with precision. Room's got no chance. 4-1. Germany's really showing their class now, but Curacao's got time to respond if they can find their rhythm.
It's damage limitation time for Curacao now. They're just trying to keep it respectable, but Germany smell blood. With the way they're moving, the quality on show, they'll be licking their lips at the thought of adding more before this is done.
Curacao get a bit sloppy in midfield and Room has to boot it out for a throw. Wirtz's onto it though and wins a corner off the back of that. Germany take it short, keep the ball, work it around. Not rushing, controlling the tempo.
And here's the thing about that Musiala goal, that's the ninth time a Bayern player's picked out a Bayern teammate at the World Cup. Only Dynamo Kyiv have done it more often with 11, and Benfica with 10.
Bayern's connection runs deep, goes all the way back to 1966. That's the kind of understanding you get when you're playing together week in, week out at club level.
Locadia gets a free-kick out on the left against Tah, gives Curacao a chance to breathe. Antonisse swings it in and Leandro Bacuna flicks a header but it's over the bar. Close to troubling Neuer but not quite enough on it.
Advocaat brings on Margaritha to replace Locadia up top. Locadia's given everything out there, worked hard, but it's time for fresh legs. Let's see if Margaritha can add something different to Curacao's attack.
And it's five! Brown adds another, and what a strike. Undav flicks it out perfectly into his path and Brown drills it home. Was tight on the offside, had to check it, but he's clear. First international goal for the full-back and he's picked a good time to get it. Germany absolutely in their rhythm now.
Brown's off the pitch, his job done. Raum comes on to replace him. A nice moment for the full-back to get his international goal and then take a breather.
And it's six! Undav off the bench and he's added his name to the scoresheet. Germany just passing it around the penalty area like it's a training ground, Havertz finds Kimmich, could shoot himself, but he lays it for Undav instead. Undav's effort gets a touch off Leandro Bacuna and loops in. Germany's in complete control now.
Chong's off the pitch, Kastaneer comes on to replace him. Curacao making changes as Germany continue to turn the screw.
And that's seven. Havertz gets his second. Undav threads it through and Havertz's got the space to pick his spot, clips it beautifully over Room. Lovely finish, no doubt about it. But yeah, you have to feel for Curacao at this point. They came here to compete and Germany's just picked them apart. This one's got away from them.
Germany's not done yet. They're going for eight, snapping into every challenge, throwing bodies forward relentlessly. They want to make this a statement. And they've won a free-kick just outside the box, left of centre. This could be it.
