Here is Liverpool's line-up for tonight's face-off with Galatasaray:
And here is Galatasaray's line-up for the big game against Liverpool:
The game gets underway at Rams Park. Liverpool, in a green kit tonight, kicking from right to left and Galatasaray from left to right in the first half.
What a whirlwind start! Seconds after Liverpool miss a big chance to open scoring with Cody Gakpo's effort blocked on the line, Galatasary earn a penalty with Baris Alper Yilmaz going down in the Liverpool box. Victor Osimhen steps up to take it and drills it straight down the middle to convert in the 16th minute.
Six other Champions League games are concurrently being played across Europe. Marseille have surged to a 3-0 lead against Ajax at the Stade Velodrome, while Chelsea lead Benfica 1-0 and Bayern Munich are ahead by a thumping 4-0 margin already versus Pafos FC.
A noisy, tumultuous half of football comes to an end after three minutes of added time that stretch to nearly five. Liverpool find themselves behind with work to do, as Victor Osimhen's 16th-minute penalty separating them and Galatasaray.
The players return from the lemon break and the second half gets underway. Liverpool now kicking from left to right and Galatasaray from right to left.
Alisson Becker springs out of his line and cuts down the angle to stop Victor Osimhen's shot on goal in the 54th minute. But the Liverpool goalie injures himself in the process, and has to leave the pitch. Georgia custodian Giorgi Mamardashvili comes in to replace Alisson.
We are into the last 15 minutes and Liverpool are finding their quest for an equaliser hard. A series of substitutions, including the entry of Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak, has not helped Arne Slot's side, at least as yet.
Massive moment! Liverpool are denied a late reprieve as they earn a penalty in the 88th minute, which is overturned by VAR eventually. Ibrahima Konate goes down in the box and the referee points to the spot, but upon review, the decision does not hold.
Eight minutes of added time, meanwhile.
Eight long minutes elapse without fruit for Liverpool, as the full-time whistle blows and the scoreline stays at 1-0 in Galatasaray's favour. The Reds stand beaten on matchday 2, while the Turkish giants ride Osimhen's penalty to offset their big loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the campaign opener.
