Star forward Kylian Mbappe starts for Real Madrid, and so does captain Vinicius Junior. Here is Los Blancos' line-up for tonight's clash:
And here is Kairat Almaty's line-up for their daunting home challenge of Real Madrid:
FC Kairat XI: Kalmurza, Tapalov, Martynovich, Sorokin, Mata, Arad, Kasabulat, Mrynskiy, Jorginho, Gromyko, Satpayev.
The two teams walk out to the pitch and line up at the centre. The Champions League anthem plays first, as is customary. We are moments away from kick-off.
Play gets underway in Almaty. FC Kairat kicking from left to right and Real Madrid from right to left in the first half. And what a start from the home side! They spring an attacking move and come close to scoring within 10 seconds. Not to be, though as Dastan Satpaev's header is saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Madrid string together a promising move in the 11th minute which ends with Kylian Mbappe being warded off and a corner for the visitors. Nothing comes of it, however.
Another strong build-up for Madrid in the 21st minute, and again it leads to Kylian Mbappe, who shoots towards the bottom right corner. But Kairat goalie Sherkhan Kalmurza anticipates it brilliantly, diving to his left to keep out the shot.
There comes the opener for Real Madrid! Franco Mastantuono draws a foul in the penalty area in the 24th minute, and Kylian Mbappe steps up to take the spot-kick. The French superstar calmly slots it into the bottom left corner to beat Kalmurza, and Madrid take the lead after 10-plus minutes relentless attacking pressure.
Mbappe continues to be in the thick of the action. Now he takes a right-footed shot from the centre of the box, but it flies over the Kairat bar in the 39th minute.
The first half concludes after just one minute of added time. The home team made a really bright start, but Los Blancos' class eventually shone through and they go into the break with the lead, but only a one-goal one.
The teams return from the mid-game interval. Kairat now kicking from right to left and Real Madrid from left to right.
Mbappe continues to make merry in the second half. The former PSG striker surges forward after a fast break, and skillfully chips the ball past Kalmurza into the Kairat net in the 52nd minute. Madrid now two goals to the good.
Oh dear. Kairat have an invaluable opportunity to score against Real Madrid snatched from their hands. They earn a penalty in the 69th minute but it goes through a VAR check, and is eventually overturned upon review.
As if to rub salt into Kairat's wounds, Mbappe drills in a thundering low strike in the 73rd minute from outside the box to complete a well-deserved hat-trick.
Real Madrid's goal rush has not ended yet. Joining Mbappe on the scoring sheet, Eduardo Camavinga nets via a header in the 83rd minute, responding to Rodrygo's ball. That's Los Blancos' fourth of the night and there's still some time to go, with three minutes added to the second half.
Indeed, Madrid find enough time to squeeze another goal in. Brahim Diaz powers in a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner in the third minute of stoppage time, and it ends up being the last kick of the game. Real Madrid complete a 5-0 thrashing of FC Kairat to make it two wins out of two and provisionally jump to the top of the Champions League standings.
