Ecuador 1-0 Argentina, FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL Qualifiers: Valencia Penalty Seals Win In 10-Men Clash
Ecuador handed Argentina a 1-0 defeat in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 CONMEBOL Qualifiers match at Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha in Guayaquil. Enner Valencia stepped up on his 100th cap to convert a penalty in the 13th minute of injury time at the end of the first half. A foul on Angelo Preciado by Nicolas Tagliafico led to VAR awarding the spot kick, which Valencia dispatched calmly. Earlier, Argentina had been reduced to ten men when Nicolas Otamendi received a red card for a last-man tackle. At the start of the second half, Moises Caicedo saw a second yellow that restored numerical parity. However, Ecuador held on at their home stadium to see out a big win.
