Diogo Jota Car Crash: Truck Driver Who Witnessed Tragedy Says Liverpool Star Was Not Speeding

It’s been a week since Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva lost their lives in a devastating car crash on a Spanish highway. The Lamborghini Huracan they were travelling in veered off the road, overturned, and burst into flames, killing both brothers instantly.

The truck driver who witnessed the accident, Jose Azevedo, has now spoken out, claiming the vehicle was not speeding at the time of the crash.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Azevedo challenged early forensic findings which suggested the car may have been going over the speed limit, possibly causing a tyre to burst. Investigators continue to examine whether speed played a role in the tragedy.

Jota, 28, who played a key role in Liverpool’s 2024–25 Premier League title win and was also part of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph, tragically died alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident on a Spanish highway.

Speculation following the crash that killed Jota and his brother Silva pointed to speeding on a highway notorious for accidents.

However, Spanish truck driver Azevedo, who witnessed the tragedy, told the Daily Mail that the Liverpool forward was not driving recklessly. “The family has my word they were not speeding,” he said, calling the road dark and dangerous. Azevedo added that he stopped and tried to help, but there was nothing he could do.

The fatal accident occurred when a suspected tyre blowout caused their Lamborghini Huracan to lose control while overtaking another vehicle, leading it to veer off the road, overturn, and burst into flames.
