In an earlier match today, Argentina stream rolled Jordan by 3-0, courtesy of a hat-trick by Lionel Messi, who leveled with Miroslav Klose (16) to become the leading goal-scorer in World Cup. Watch the highlights of ARG vs ALG match here.
The pre-match formalities are done and Austria got the match underway after the referee blew the whistle. Jordan's Abu Al Nadi races to the left and launches a cross which goes to the skipper Haddad's right side.
Jordan remain extremely compact and disciplined at the back, while Austria are still trying to figure out a way to unlock the defence. Kalajdzic rises to nod a cross into the six-yard area, but Jordan deal with it comfortably. Austria come again and attempt to send Laimer through on goal, but his run is timed a fraction too early, with the offside flag going up and Jordan earning a relieving free-kick.
Goaaalll...! Austria dodges the ball cleverly from Jordan's midfield and Romano Schmid finds it at the edge of the box, who in turn fires in shoots a curling ball into the far corner, away from the Jordinian goalkeeper's reach.
Jordan's Ali Olwan gets past the defender inside the D and fires a shot towards the right side of the goal but Alexander Schlager makes a superb reflex save to deny Jordan an equalizer.
Referee Dahane Beida blows the whistle and with it the stoppage comes to an end. The players are heading back to the locker rooms with Austria being 1-0 ahead, courtesy of a 21st minute strike by Romano Schmid.
Both set of players are back in the field for the final half of the game. Odeh Al Fakhouri (Jordan) swings a cross into the box, but it's far too close to Alexander Schlager, who smothers the ball.
Goaaalll...! Jordan fires their first goal of World Cup and its Ali Olwan who gets his team on the sheet. Olwan shoots a curling ball into the far corner which goes off the post. The score is level now.
Abulaila looks completely unsettled in goal. He fails to get any real contact on a punch from a corner, and the loose ball drops invitingly for Arnautovic after taking a touch off Posch inside the six-yard area. Arnautovic controls it and buries his effort into the corner, seemingly putting Austria back in front. But hold on — scrap that. The goal is ruled out after the ball is judged to have struck Posch's arm in the build-up. Abulaila has escaped a major scare there, and the scores remain level.
It's an own goal! That's bad luck for Jordan as Yazan Al Arab' heads a corner kick into his own goal that gives the advantage to Austria and Jordan once again fail to deal with a set-piece situation.
Just at the brink of the fulltime, there's a penalty claim by Austria and the referee and has agreed to it. To the Austrians delight, the referee has checked it and have given a penalty to them. Marko Arnautovic sends an unstoppable penalty past into left side of the goal and seals the match for Austria
That's a wrap! That's a wrap from our end, we'll be back soon with another blog, until then, bye bye.
