Sam Tickle makes a really good save to prevent further humiliation for Wigan Athletic. Leandro Trossard releases a reverse pass wide left to Martin Zubimendi. The latter dinks in a cross, Gabriel Martinelli even reaches there but his header gets saved by a diving Tickle. Arsenal's killer instinct has been missing in this half.

Arsenal have toned down their approach a bit. In the second half, they are not looking to score very eagerly. Eberechi Eze off to a flier in this game. Arsenal was controlling possession when Eze received the ball and he opened up Gabriel Martinelli from the left channel through. Martinelli carried the ball and finished it across the goal. Arsenal have doubled their lead and look comfortable.

It’s a fantastic goal from the hosts, and exactly what Eberechi Eze needed. The summer signing threads a superb pass into the path of Noni Madueke, who cushions his finish into the bottom‑left corner with his stronger left foot. A perfect start for the Gunners!

The match is underway and Wigan try to apply some early pressure, but Arsenal have a throw‑in, which Lewis‑Skelly will take. The youngster had been handed the chance to showcase his ability in a more natural midfield role, but Riccardo Calafiori, originally due to start at left‑back, was withdrawn extremely late. As a result, Lewis‑Skelly has been tasked to drop into the defence instead.
