New Zealand beat West Indies by nine runs in the 3rd match of the five-match T20I series in Nelson on Sunday, November 9. They have now taken a lead of 2-1 in the five-match series.
In the first match, West Indies edged New Zealand by 7 runs, only for the hosts to respond in dramatic fashio4n in the second game, squeezing a 3-run win thanks to a blistering 78 off 28 by Mark Chapman.
Talking about the 3rd T20I, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first, intent on taking the lead in the series. They got off to a decent start with the openers seeing off the West Indies bowling attack, and then key contributions from Devon Conway (56) and Daryl Mitchell (41) helped build a competitive total of 177 for 9 in their 20 overs.
The West Indies bowlers rallied late in the innings to keep things in check, preventing New Zealand from comfortably posting beyond 190.
Chasing 178, West Indies looked to apply pressure early, but the New Zealand bowlers struck crucial blows. Ish Sodhi in particular made an impact, his over included a wicket and a run out. He ended up with the figurs of 3/34 and was awarded Player of the Match as well.
West Indies found themselves in trouble at 68-6 (9 overs) and despite a spirited lower‐order fight-back from Romario Shepherd (49) and Shamar Springer (39), could only muster 168 all out, falling short by nine runs.
