Nepal Premier League 2024: 'NPL Will Help In Growth Of Cricket In The Country', Says Shikhar Dhawan

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan is excited to participate in the inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League, starting on November 30 in Kathmandu. Dhawan, who will represent the Karnali Yaks, highlighted the passion for cricket in Nepal and the opportunity for young players to learn from international stars. "I can’t wait for the first match and for the action to begin!” he stated.

"Everyone has seen the passion that exists for the game in the country and this league will further help the game grow in the country," the left-hander added. “With top players from around the world coming to Nepal, the young players will learn a lot from their experience. I can’t wait for the first match and the action to get underway"!

The former Indian opener is one of the leading run-scorers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with 6,769 runs in 222 matches. He retired from international cricket in August.

Other notable players set to compete include Ben Cutting, Unmukt Chand, Ravi Bopara, Chadwick Walton, and Marchand de Lange.

The league will consist of eight franchises: Kathmandu Gurkhas, Chitwan Rhinos, Biratnagar Kings, Janakpur Bolts, Pokhara Avengers, Lumbini Lions, Karnali Yaks, and Sudurpashchim Royals, totalling 32 matches. The final will include a reserve day.

Nepal has made significant strides in international cricket in recent years. They participated in the ICC Men's T20I World Cup 2024 and delivered some impressive performances, including a near victory against eventual finalists South Africa.

The league is expected to be a game-changer for the sport in the country, enabling local players to share the field and the dressing room with international stars.
