"There's not as much one-day cricket between major events, I think that makes these series even more important. A few of us have been playing some List-A cricket back home, so we have got a bit of the format under our belt. But it's a format that we enjoy playing so when you have those series now, they are more important than ever with limited amounts." -
The weather in Rajkot for the 2nd ODI between India and New Zealand is ideal. Expect clear, sunny skies with zero chances of rain. Temperatures will peak around 26°C to 28°C during the afternoon and dip to 13°C by the evening.
The Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot is known for being a batter’s paradise. We can expect a flat, hard surface with bounce and even carry, making it ideal for stroke-play.
With short boundaries and a super fast outfield, scores above 300 are typical. The last time India played here was in September 27, 2023 against Australia, who piled up 352 runs in the 1st innings.
The Men in Blue fell short in their run-chase, losing by a margin of 66 runs.
New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Michael Bracewell: "It looks like a really good surface, and hopefully the dew comes into play later in the evening, which should make things a bit nicer for batting under lights. The last game was a tight one and I was proud of how the boys fought right till the end. We gave ourselves a chance with a couple of late wickets, and today we’re looking to keep taking wickets through the middle and build that pressure."
Shubman Gill: "We would actually have preferred to bat first, based on the last few games here. Even yesterday there wasn’t much dew, and the players feel the surface tends to slow down as the innings goes on, so batting first looked the better option."
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen. It is a bright sunny day in Rajkot, absolutely perfect for an ODI game. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who had contrasting starts to the series in Vadodara, will be aiming to get India off to a flyer.
Kyle Jamieson is set to bowl the first over. It is going to be a cracker. Here we go for the 1st innings of this 2nd one-dayer.
All-rounder Kyle Jamieson bowls a tight first over to the dangerous Rohit Sharma, who treaded with caution across those six deliveries.
Jamieson held a perfect line-length, didn't allow any room to Rohit to extend his arms.
Zakary Foulkes complimented Kyle Jamieson's first over as the former conceded only run off Indian captain Shubman Gill. Very unlike the way India usually start their innings. More than 12 balls already without a boundary.
Shubman Gill cuts away Zakary Foulkes towards off-side for the first boundary of the Indian innings. It wasn't a bad delivery but Gill had too much room to free his arms as Foulkes tried to get the ball to swing away from the right hander.
Runs have started to flow now for India as Rohit Sharma scored back-to-back fours off Kyle Jamieson. After no boundaries in the opening 12 balls or so, India have scored 5 since the end of the 3rd over.
Shubman Gill brings up the first 50 runs for India with a classic square between the two Kiwi fielders.
Rohit Sharma's lack of luck continues in the series as he has to depart for a score of 24 off 38. However, the crowd is on their feet to welcome another Indian cricketing legend Virat Kohli, who comes and scores a boundary through an exquisite cover drive.
Back-to-back fifties for Indian captain Shubman Gill and he scores this one off 47 balls at a strike rate of 108. In the 1st ODI, he got out right after scoring an half-century but this time around, he will be hoping to convert it into a century.
Oh no! Shubman Gill has to walk back again right after scoring his half-century. Very unfortunate. The tall Kyle Jamieson bowled a short-pitched delivery and Gill tried to club that away but ended up finding Daryll Mitchell who completes a simple catch.
100 up for India in 17 overs and it has been a decent start for them. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were both unlucky to have got dismissed early on in the game, but Indian fans have no reasons to worry as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are in the middle.
Shreyas Iyer gone. After missing out on his half-century by a whisker in the 1st ODI, the right-hand batter departs for just 8 off 7.
Lured by a full ball outside off, Shreyas went for a big drive but couldn't get the lift he needed. He picked out Bracewell at mid-off, who stayed low to pluck the catch comfortably with both hands.
The pressure of dot balls finally has its say as Virat Kohli gets played on and chops on to his own stumps. Massive wicket for New Zealand, this is what they were looking for.
Superb delivery from Kristian Clarke - the ball was angling inside and Kohli wanted to play it through the point region but got dragged onto the stumps. The crowd has gone silent. Tremendous passage of play for the Kiwis.
It's been 53 balls since the last boundary was scored by an Indian batter in the 1st innings. The pressure is piling up and it is apparent. After what was a decent start, two new batters are in the crease all of a sudden.
It all depends on Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul now.
It will be fair to say that New Zealand have been the better side in the middle overs. Only 20 runs have been scored off the last 5 overs and the pitch, too, has started to behave differently.
The odd slower one is remaining very slow and KL Rahul had almost got out the same way Virat Kohli lost his wicket.
Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul are making the scoreboard tick slowly and steadily, but all the credits should go to the New Zealand bowling attack for limiting the run flow.
There is indeed something for the spinners. Skipper Michael Bracewell has conceded just 18 runs off his 7 overs.
Glenn Phillips has leaked 4.33 runs in each of his 3 overs. Debutant Jayden Lennox has been impressive as well, conceding 27 off 7 overs.
Speaking of debutant left-arm off-spinner Jayden Lennox, the 31-year-old has been excellent with his line-length and flight. He hasn't bowled many loose deliveries and looks like a prospect possibly for the next 2-3 years.
We have traced how Lennox got into the senior team after years of domestic grind.
Michael Bracewell takes a very good catch to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja for 27 off 44 against the run of play. New Zealand could be restricting India to a score of less than 300 if things continue like this.
Jadeja was taken by surprise with that ball from Bracewell - it came quickly and the Indian all-rounder had no control over his bottom hand.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has come in for Washington Sundar, has come out to bat.
Run-a-ball half-century from KL Rahul. It is a timely one as India desperately needed someone to spend as much time as possible in the middle. Rahul had a good partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and now he has to stitch another with Nitish Kumar Reddy.
The run-rate is back to more than 5 per over as KL Rahul and Nitish Kumar Reddy eye a strong finish in the final 7 overs. Their partnership is now at 32 off 30 and it is time for both the batters to free their arms and play those big shots. Only then India will be able to post anything near or over 300.
Zakary Foulkes breaks the partnership between KL Rahul and Nitish Kumar Reddy. The all-rounder wanted to club the short ball away but ends up finding Glenn Phillips at deep midwicket. Nitish Rana, who showed his batting ability in the 1st ODI, is the new man in.
A terrific knock from KL Rahul and he brings up his 8th one-day ton with a massive six off Kyle Jamieson. Wonderful shot that, fantastic innings from him. Rahul played shots all around the ground, his tempo has been excellent.
That's it for the 1st innings. A composed full-century from KL Rahul helps India post 284 runs on the board and the Men in Blue will be satisfied with the recovery they made.
The Indians were 118/4 at one point and to get a total of over 250, required a lot of patience and courage from KL Rahul.

Siraj steams in under lights to Conway, full on off, defended solidly. India upbeat in a tight huddle, dew already a talking point as the chase begins.
Siraj tests both batters with a probing line, Conway remains calm, Nicholls rotates strike once, and a classy Conway cover-drive brings the only boundary of the over. New Zealand move to 11 without loss, steady start to the chase.
Harshit Rana delivers a massive breakthrough, bowling Conway with a beauty that jagged just enough to rattle off stump. Will Young survives a nervy start, then gets off the mark with a neat flick for two. New Zealand end the over at 24/1, with India firmly on top after removing the in-form opener.
Final over of the powerplay and New Zealand haven't had many chances to score runs. Tremendous work done by the bowlers in the initial stage of this match.
Henry Nicholls is on his way back to the dressing room after scoring 10 off 24 as Prasidh Krishna gets India's 2nd wicket of the night. It was a slightly short delivery and Nicholls tried to pull it away but the ball takes an inside edge and chops onto the stumps. Extra bounce might have been a factor as well.
The in-form Kiwi top-order batter Daryl Mitchell has taken control of things at the middle at the moment. Will Young is also batting well and he will have stick to the middle for New Zealand to have a crack at the target.
The first 100 run comes up for the Kiwi team as Daryl Mitchell and Will Young continue to lay the foundation for a thrilling chase. Their partnership is building up and Shubman Gill has thrown the spinners to break this 50+ run stand for the 3rd wicket.
This partnership is well and truly building up as both Will Young and Daryl Mitchell have scored half-centuries and their stand has also reached to over 80 runs. Nothing is working for the Indian bowlers at the moment.
Daryl Mitchell is showing why he is currently the number 2 ODI batter in the ICC rankings. He is on-course towards a full century and so is his partner Will Young.
The game is appearing to be slipping away from India's hands and unless they break this partnership, it will be game, set and match for the visiting New Zealand team.
The Men in Blue are looking helpless with the equation now coming down to 98 off 90 after 35 overs.
A huge moment in the game as Daryl Mitchell has been dropped by Prasidh Krishna at 82 runs. Prasidh Krishna came running from the long-off region as the ball stayed in the air for a very long time.
Krishna thought he had the ball but he misjudged completely. Real opportunity wasted by India. The Kiwis are in supreme control now.
Finally some luck for Kuldeep Yadav as Will Young heads towards the dressing room after a fantastic knock of 87 off 90 balls. Top delivery from the left-arm Chinaman. He tosses it up and Young wanted to sweep it away but only gets the leading edge.
Nitish Kumar Reddy completes a comfortable catch.
New Zealand need 57 off 59 runs, all because of that partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Will Young. With the dangerous Glenn Phillips at the crease, the Kiwis are soon going to level the 3-match series by 1-1.
Daryl Mitchell brings up a brilliant hundred with a calm push down the ground, removing his helmet to soak in the applause as Glenn Phillips congratulates him. Harshit Rana keeps things tight with a controlled over, but New Zealand move to 235 for 3, with Mitchell firmly in charge of the chase.
Daryl Mitchell continues to dictate terms with another boundary, calmly rotating strike with Phillips to collect eight from the over. New Zealand move to 252 for 3, with Mitchell firmly steering the chase.
Daryl Mitchell keeps finding the gaps, punishing a loose ball with a crisp boundary while Phillips chips in with smart running. New Zealand move to 268 for 3, with Mitchell in complete control of the chase.
Mitchell finishes it in style with a sensational scoop over the keeper’s head, falling over but smiling as the ball races to the fence. New Zealand seal a 7-wicket win, with Mitchell unbeaten on a brilliant 131.

New Zealand produced a calm, clinical chase to level the series, riding on Daryl Mitchell’s superb unbeaten century. After slipping to 46/2, Mitchell and Will Young added a match-defining stand that kept the required rate under control. Young’s 87 ended a 162-run partnership, but Mitchell carried on to register his eighth ODI hundred and finish the job with flair. India’s 284, built around KL Rahul’s ton, looked competitive, but the pitch eased under lights and the visitors made it count to seal a seven-wicket win in style.
Thank You for joining.
