Yashasvi Jaiswal missed a century and fell for 87 as the third wicket of India on the opening day of the second Test against England going on at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Jaiswal tried to cut England captain Ben Stokes towards the Point region but ended up edging the ball into the gloves of wicket-keeper Jamie Smith. The 23-year-old left-hander got out on his 107th ball and had hit 13 boundaries.

When Jaiswal fell in the 46th over, India were at 161 with captain Shubman Gill joined by his deputy Rishabh Pant.

Apart from falling short of a century, the left-hander also missed establishing a new record for the fastest Indian to 2000 Test runs in terms of innings batted. If he had scored 10 more runs and reached 97, Jaiswal would have surpassed legendary duo of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag in the list of fastest Indians to 2000 Test runs. Dravid and Sehwag scored 2000 runs in 40 innings. Jaiswal will play his 4th innings in India's second dig.

In terms of Test matches, the record currently sits with Sunil Gavaskar who took 23 games to reach the 2000-run milestone. Jaiswal is playing his 21st Test and still has enough time to surpass Gavaskar.
