Third day action resumes under Guwahati sky, and Marco Jansen wastes no time settling into a probing rhythm. From round the wicket with three slips, a gully and a short leg waiting, he challenges KL Rahul straightaway, one good-length ball in the channel that Rahul meets with a half-forward defensive poke, followed by another that angles back in from outside off and is wisely left alone. India are easing back into the grind, but Jansen has come in sharp.
It was an eventful over by Marco Jansen, where the ball was coming off the surface, and one ball even had an awkward bounce that caught Jaiswal by surprise as he just gloved the ball, but unfortunately for him, it didn't pop into the air for a long time. However, at the end of the over, Jaiswal got slight width and he pounced onto it and slashed it for a boundary to the deep point region.
Both the Indian openers are now easing out on the crease after some early jitters. Yashasvi Jaiswal has opened his hands a bit and hit Mulder for two boundaries in the 12th over. India must have a good opening stand while trailing by 489 in the first innings.
Simon Harmer, right-arm spinner, is into the attack for the first time in the innings. He was the mainstay of the Proteas bowling in the last match and played an instrumental role in scripting their win over India. In this match, he has also started well by bowling a probing length, not allowing either of the openers to go on the front foot or the back foot.
The Indian openers provided the sort of start required while chasing a big 1st innings total. Yashasvi Jaiswal (36*) played the role of the enforcer in the partnership by playing some crisp sweeps to both the South African spinners.
Edge and taken in slips, South Africa draws the first blood against India. KL Rahul who was looking comfortable on the crease is caught at slips to Keshav Maharaj's bowling. Maharaj bowled a slow fuller delivery, prodding Rahul forward while the bounced a little extra and took off the shoulder of Rahul's bat straight into Aiden Makram's hands
India are looking to forge another partnership after Keshav Maharaj broke India's opening stand by getting KL Rahul caught at slips. Sai Sudharsan has come at no.3 to join good looking Yashasvi Jaiswal on the crease.
Yashasvi Jaiswal finally breaks the South Africa jinx and scores his first half-century against South Africa. India would desperately want him to get a big hundred from here to stay in this match. This is also the first fifty by an Indian batter in this series.
South Africa gets the big fish, Yashasvi Jaiswal departs after scoring a well-made 58 and that's a huge loss for India. Simon Harmer finally reaped the dividends of his probing length. It was a slow looping delivery which stopped on the surface a bit and took the outside edge of Jaiswal's bat and Jansen took a good low diving catch to dismiss in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Another wicket for South Africa, Sai Sudharsan dismissed for just 15 runs off a good catch by Rickelton. Simon Harmer gets his 2nd wicket and India losing their way after a good solid start by the openers. Skipper Rishabh Pant comes to the crease, India need a big knock from their captain.
It is Tea! South Africa stands tall in the match with 4 key wickets in the session. India, despite getting a good 50-run stand, lost the last 3 wickets in just 7 runs and are now behind in this match by a long margin. India will require skipper Rishabh Pant and veteran Ravindra Jadeja to have a marathon partnership to compete in this match.
The umpires and the players are back on the field for the 2nd session of Day 3 of the 2nd Test. India lost 4 wickets in the previous session and are still 387 runs behind South Africa's 1st innings total. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja have a big on their hands in this session.
India loses their 5th wicket as Rishabh Pant gets caught behind. It's a body blow for India as Rishabh Pant is known to pull off heists in Test cricket but not this time as he went down the track to take down Marco Jansen but only ends up getting a feather edge to the keeper. India in hot waters against South Africa
7th one bites the dust for India. Marco Jansen bowls a well-directed bouncer to Nitish Reddy to which he had no clue, the ball took the edge of the bat and Aiden took a brilliant diving catch at 2nd slip to dismiss the 7th Indian batter. India are now reeling on the ground against South Africa.
India's batting woes continues as they loses their 7th wicket. Ravindra Jadeja gets a vicious bouncer from Marco Jansen that took off from the ground and took of Jadeja's bat after rubbing his shoulder and went straight to Aiden Markram in the slips. It was an unlucky way of dismissal and everything is going in favour of South Africa in this match.
Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have managed to break the flow of wickets and forge a small partnership for the 8th wicket. India are still in deep trouble as they are still 348 runs behind South Africa's 1st innings total.
A slight ray of hope for Indian fans as Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have put on an ongoing 31 run-stand for the 8th wicket. Sundar has been getting the Indian batting out of trouble for quite some time now and this time he's found another partner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav and both of them are trying to stabilize the Indian innings a bit after a dramatic collapse.
The partnership between Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav is still going strong and they are slowly taking the Indian innings forward. The partnership has now become 43-runs strong and is now India's 2nd best partnership of the innings after the opening stand between Rahul and Jaiswal.
The lunch has been taken for Day 3 and India lost 3 crucial wickets of Rishabh Pant, Nitish Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja in this session for only 72 runs. India are still 315 runs behind South Africa's first innings score. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav's have provided some respite to India but they still have a herculean task at their hands.
Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have started the 3rd session cautiously without taking any chances. India need both of them to go on for as long as possible at least till today.
South African finally breaks the 72-run partnership between Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav as Simon Harmer gets Sundar caught at slips. Sundar misjudges the length and prods forwards to a good length delivery and ends up getting caught at slip by Aiden Markram.
Marco Jansen gets Jasprit Bumrah caught by Kylie Verreynne and with this India's innings comes to an end. Jansen gets a six-wicket haul, playing an integral role in India's batting collapse. Temba Bavuma signals that he won't enforce a follow-on and SA who have a lead of 288 runs will bat again on this wicket.
South Africa begin their chase with a lead of 288 runs and get two fours in the 1st over of Bumrah. SA are completely dominating the test match with their lead going up to 297 runs and have all 10 wickets in hand
Bails have been taken off by the umpire and stumps it in. India could not manage to get a South African as they completely dominated the day and have tightened their grip on the match. SA are now leading by 314 runs with 10 wickets in hand. A hard day for India as their batters put on a flop show and they will have to pull out a miraculous performance to even compete in this match.
That's a wrap of Day 3 of the 2nd Test between India and South Africa. We'll be back with the live coverage Day 4 of the match, until then, bye bye.
