Jadeja keeps things tight as the session moves on. He fires one at Harmer on a skiddy 96kph line, and Harmer can’t do much more than rock back and block it.

Bavuma then taps the next ball into the gap at cover and hustles through for a sharp single. Jadeja straightens up again, slips one down leg, and Bavuma tries to sweep on instinct, but he’s beaten, thudded on the pad, and left frustrated as India keep cranking up the pressure.

Bumrah breaks through! A wicked nip-backer sneaks past Corbin Bosch’s defence and sends the off-stump cartwheeling. Bosch, who had fought hard for his 25 off 37, can only watch the magic ball end the stand. Eden erupts, India sniff the finish now.

Kuldeep keeps South Africa under the pump. He draws Bavuma forward with a teasing drift that beats the outside edge and has the crowd buzzing. Bavuma answers with soft hands next ball, steering it past slip for a hard-run two. Kuldeep goes fuller to finish, but Bavuma reaches the pitch and smothers it cleanly. The fight continues.

Indian captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa after suffering a neck spasm just three balls into his innings on Saturday at Eden Gardens. He did not return to bat and was taken to a Kolkata hospital, where he remains under observation.

The BCCI confirmed that Gill will take no further part in the match and will continue to be monitored by the medical team.
