Ashton Turner’s Multan Sultans (MS) face Marnus Labuschagne’s Hyderabad Kingsmen (HYK) in Match 33 of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday, April 22.

MS have been one of the most consistent sides this season, sitting second on the points table with five wins from seven matches, while HYK have staged a strong comeback after a poor start that saw them lose four on the trot, including one against the Sultans, before bouncing back with three straight wins to stay in contention.

Hyderabad Kingsmen have won the toss and have opted to field.

Sahibzada Farhan and Steven Smith stroll out to the middle, the crowd buzzing already as the lights settle in. Farhan takes strike, calm on the surface but you can feel the intent building. Smith at the other end, just quietly watching, ticking over ideas in that experienced head.

And here comes Mohammad Ali, ready to start things off.

First ball of the innings, fielders are set, the tension is real. You can almost hear the stadium lean forward. Let’s see how this one begins, no easing in here, straight into the contest.

Hunain Shah charges in, and BOOM.

Steve Smith just opens up the hands and that’s disappeared, absolutely smoked. Short of a good length outside off, Smith rocks back, picks it early, and bang into the pull. Midwicket was just a spectator as that sailed way back into the stands.

Oh, that came out of nowhere from nowhere near a loose ball, but Smith has made it look ridiculously easy. First big statement of the innings.

Saim Ayub comes in, and Farhan cashes in.

Short and turning away outside off, just enough width offered, and Farhan isn’t missing out. Rocks back, slashes through the line, and that’s ripped away past backward point for four.

Oh, that was sweet timing, no hesitation, just pure intent. Karachi already warming up to this one.

Hassan Khan tosses it up, and Smith is already on it.

Slightly outside off, just begging to be played, and Smith drops low, gets into position early and whips the sweep with control. It races wide of long-on and into the ropes for four.

Labuschagne floats it up, and Smith says thank you very much.

Right in the slot, and that’s all the invitation he needed. Smith gets under it, swings through clean, and launches it over wide long-on, straight into the crowd.

FIFTY up in style. No fuss, no drama, just pure timing and authority. Karachi applauds as Smith raises the bat, he’s cruising here.

Glenn Maxwell strikes right after being taken apart for two sixes, getting the last laugh in a dramatic passage. He slows it up outside off and draws Sahibzada Farhan into the slog sweep, but the connection isn’t clean and he mistimes it off the toe-end. Marnus Labuschagne makes no mistake in the deep, ending a fine knock of 66 off 43, packed with 4 fours and 5 sixes.

Hassan Khan drifts it in, and Smith is already on the move.

He steps out with intent, clears the front leg and suddenly opens up the off side. That’s pure timing, an inside-out lofted drive, right off the middle, and it just keeps going.

No one’s getting close to that. Clean, elegant, and absolutely controlled from Steve Smith.

Mohammad Ali comes round the wicket, and strikes.

Oh, that’s clever bowling. Masood tries to shuffle across early, looking for something fine, but Ali has read him perfectly. The slower one is slipped in off the back of the hand, and the pace just disappears off the surface.

Masood goes for the scoop, but it’s miles away. The ball sneaks through and rattles the top of off stump.

Cleaned up! Shan Masood is gone for just 1 off 2, and Mohammad Ali has pulled off a beauty with pure deception.

Multan Sultans post a commanding 213/7, riding on a dominant opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan and Steven Smith. Farhan set the tempo early while Smith paced his innings to perfection before exploding once set, the highlight being a brutal over off Hunain that flipped the momentum completely.

Both brought up fifties, and Smith pushed on to a stunning 47-ball hundred, taking control of the innings. HYK did well to pull things back at the death, conceding just 31 in the last four overs, but the damage was already done, a stiff chase awaits.

Chase underway in Karachi as Maaz Sadaqat and Marnus Labuschagne step out with a big target ahead. Sadaqat takes strike, Labuschagne at the other end, both looking to set the tone early. Mohammad Imran Randhawa has the new ball in hand, field set, and there’s already a bit of tension in the air, early wickets or a solid start, this first over could set the tone.

Muhammad Ismail strikes early, and HYK are jolted.

Short burst from Maaz Sadaqat ends quickly as he looks to go again, but this time it doesn’t come off. The ball flies off the bat and Josh Philippe makes no mistake behind the stumps.

Gone for 7 off 5, early breakthrough for MS, and oh, that’s a big moment right at the start of the chase.

Randhawa goes wide, and Labuschagne tries something cheeky.

He shapes up for the reverse-scoop, trying to get inventive early, but the line is just too far outside off. Swings through, and misses completely.

No run, but you can already see Labuschagne looking to disrupt the rhythm, not holding back here.

Muhammad Ismail strikes again, HYK in deeper trouble.

Saim Ayub looks to take the aggressive route, charging down to a hard-length delivery angling away and going big down the ground. But he doesn’t quite get under it, just the inside half of the bat, and it balloons straight to mid-on.

Mohammad Nawaz is rock solid there, no mistake at all. Safe hands, simple catch.

Saim Ayub gone for 5 off 10, and MS are all over this chase early on.

Muhammad Ismail bangs it in short, and Usman Khan says thank you very much.

That’s right in his zone, he rocks back, gets on top of the bounce, and absolutely hammers the pull. Clean strike, no doubt about it, and it sails comfortably over the ropes for six.

Oh, that’s a statement after the early wicket drama. Usman isn’t backing off one bit, HYK trying to wrestle back some control here.

Usman Khan brings up a blazing fifty in style, and HYK are suddenly right back in this. It’s been a brutal counterattack, he’s turned the pressure on its head with sheer intent.

This time it’s a low full toss from Randhawa, and Usman clears the front leg before launching it miles over cow corner for a huge six. A 20-ball half-century that has completely shifted the mood, Multan were cruising, but Usman has flipped the script and dragged Hyderabad roaring back into the contest.

Massive over for Hyderabad as 20 runs come off it, Usman Khan smashes three sixes off Arafat Minhas, adds a single, Labuschagne chips in with one, with just a dot to end; pure carnage and complete domination.

Decent over for Multan as Peter Siddle concedes just 9 runs and picks up a crucial wicket to break the dangerous partnership. Usman Khan and Labuschagne rotate strike early, with a six keeping the momentum going, but Siddle hits back in the final ball, banging it short, rushing Labuschagne into a mistimed pull that results in a top-edge. Mohammad Wasim Jr runs in from fine leg and takes a superb diving catch to dismiss Labuschagne for 61. Big breakthrough at the right time.

Huge over in the game, 8 runs but more importantly two massive wickets as Peter Siddle turns it around for Multan. He removes Glenn Maxwell first with a short ball that’s mistimed to deep mid-wicket, then delivers the biggest blow by dismissing a well-set Usman Khan for 101 with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort.

Massive over for Hyderabad Kingsmen, 18 runs come off it as Hassan Khan and Irfan Khan launch a late assault. Wasim Jr misses his lengths repeatedly, conceding two sixes and a four, with both batters taking full advantage of the loose deliveries. Irfan starts with a big hit, Hassan follows it up with back-to-back boundaries including a six and a perfectly placed four, while singles keep the strike rotating. Despite a dot to finish, this over gives Kingsmen a strong late boost and pushes the total past 200.

Hyderabad Kingsmen seal it in style. Needing 8 off the final over, they get off to a nervy start with a dropped catch as Hassan Khan survives on the first ball, followed by a single and another to leave 6 needed off 4. But Hassan Khan finishes it emphatically, smashing Muhammad Ismail for a six to wrap things up, ending unbeaten with a stunning 24 off just 6 balls. Brilliant late hitting under pressure to clinch a 4-wicket win.
