Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were handed a devastating blow as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated them by six wickets in match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Led by Marcus Stoinis' unbeaten 124, LSG secured a stunning victory over CSK and leapfrogged them in the IPL point table. Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad had scored a ton for Chennai Super Kings and he steered them to 210/4. (Scorecard)

Chennai Super Kings Squad: Ajinkya Rahane, Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad(c), Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Sameer Rizvi, Moeen Ali, MS Dhoni(w), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana, Shardul Thakur, Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Mitchell Santner, Daryl Mitchell, Aravelly Avanish, Maheesh Theekshana, RS Hangargekar, Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary, Prashant Solanki, Ajay Jadav Mandal, Richard Gleeson

The Chepauk track could provide assistance to the bowlers and spinners so expect the faster bowlers to make variations to their bowling. Batting could be easy too given the hot and humid conditions in Chennai.

Two teams within whispering distance of each other, so that makes this game so very important. It was very hot in the afternoon, but it is cooling down a bit now. We are very central on this lovely playing surface. To the right, it is about 66m and only one meter bigger on the left side. Down the ground it is 78m. This feels like a wicket of two halves. The half where we are standing have some specklings of grass, but the far end has a nice even covering of grass. It is not going to be a 200 sort of wicket, it is going to be a real dogfight. There is going to be some dew today, and it will come early. By 8pm, you can see a considerable amount of moisture on the outfield. But the wicket itself, you got to be in the hunt, you got to be in the fight throughout the game. The KKR game, they got about 137 which was chased down easily. This is going to be a surface like that. It is not going to be easy in the middle phase where you will see a lot of spin here, and that’s where you need to be comfortable batting on this surface. The trick for pacers will be to take pace off, bowl a lot of off cutters and big looping slower ones. This is a critical game, can’t wait for it to get started, reckon Ian Bishop and Matthew Hayden on-air.

Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul has won the toss and opted to bowl against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk.

Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul(w/c), Marcus Stoinis, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Matt Henry, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Yash Thakur

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Ajinkya Rahane, Ruturaj Gaikwad(c), Daryl Mitchell, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni(w), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana

Ruturaj Gaikwad: Nothing different, but the coin toss is something I need to work on. I've lost seven in a row I think. There will be some dew later on, but you never know how the wicket will surprise you. You just need to go out there and express yourself, if the ball in in your area they just attack it. Hoping to set the foundation upfront. One change for us - Daryl comes in for Rachin. Pretty good to have three home games, but for that we will need to win some tosses. However, it doesn't matter if you are batting first or bowling first, you need to play good cricket here to win.

KL Rahul: We'll bowl first. There is a bit of dew, we have trained here and there is a bit of dew tha will play an impact. Wicket is a bit slow and hopefully we can put their batters under pressure. We played well in all three facets, but we have left the result back in Lucknow. We know have challenging Chennai is, everyone will be cheering for them. Same team for us. No need to quieten the crowd, they always encourage good cricket.

LSG opener Quinton de Kock was dismissed early in the over of their run-chase of 211 against CSK.

CSK could have asked for a better start with removing the dangerous opening pair of KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock early inside five overs. QdK was sent back by Deepak Chahar for 0 whereas KL Rahul was out for 16.

After the early dismissals, LSG have fought back well thanks to Marcus Stoinis and Devdutt Padikkal, who have stitched an important partnership in their pursuit of 211 against CSK at Chepauk on Tuesday. Lucknow Super Giants require 128 runs in 60 balls.

Marcus Stoinis has seized the opportunity with both hands as he is fighting a lone battle for LSG against CSK at Chepauk. Lucknow Super Giants need another 74 runs in 30 balls but with Stoinis around, anything is possible.

First it was Ruturaj Gaikwad, now it's Marcus Stoinis. The Aussie all-rounder's unbeaten 124 has steered LSG to a famous six-wicket win over CSK at the Chepauk and also created history in the process. As said by Ravi Shastri on-air, this is the highest run-chase by any team on this ground and also, the highest individual score by a player in a run-chase. Stoinis has come to the party!

Scores:

CSK 210/4 (20)

LSG 213/4 (19.3)

"Tough pill to swallow, but good game of cricket. LSG played really well in the back end. We had the game in control till 13-14 overs, but Stoinis played a great innings. (On dew) It played a part, there was a huge amount of dew and it took our spinners out of the game. We could have otherwise controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game, can’t control it. Jaddu is batting at number 4 since we lost the second wicket within the powerplay. (On Dube’s entry point) Our thinking is clear that after the powerplay if there is a wicket, Shivam will come out to bat. We can’t force batters to get out after. To be honest, I thought our target wasn’t enough, it was just about par because of the dew we’ve seen during our practice sessions. But credit to the way LSG batted."

Very special, especially when it’s a game like that. We were way behind the game when we were batting so it was very special to pull it off. It was a fresh start, both teams started off at 0. Different conditions here. I think they started off really well and put us under pressure. 170-180 would’ve been a great total here but they batted really well. Full credit to Stoinis. It was not just power hitting, it was very clever batting. He picked his bowlers and played very well. (On sending Stoinis at 3) We felt like we needed to be braver and capitalize the powerplay and needed 1 power-hitter in the top-3. I’ve realized that T20 cricket has changed in the past couple of years, 170-180 doesn’t always cut it. You need to go harder in the powerplay and the impact player rule also gives you a bit more depth. (On the change to his own batting) Haven't played much T20 cricket so happy that it’s coming off. There’s no set plan, apart from the openers, everyone else is ready to go out whenever we feel it's right. We’re going to keep it flexible. (On his catch earlier) Not bad, not bad… I hope I get the catch of the tournament award (smiles), I was just being modest.

In these competitions, there are plenty of better opening batters better than me so I’ll leave it to them. It’s not just go go go, there were some bowlers we wanted to target and some bowlers we wanted to be more cautious against. There was a phase where I wasn’t able to hit the boundaries so it was great Pooran could come in and take the pressure off. Lots of ebbs and flows, just tried to keep it in control. You’re planning and structuring, you're not liking certain bowlers and you’re liking others more. I do think T20 cricket is changing, the scores that have been scored, the impact player role and how teams are taking on the bowlers. I’ve got a great relationship with the coach, me not getting a contract, I knew that long ago. It’s great to let the kids come in and get an opportunity, I’m happy to let them take my spot. But on the playing front, I’d like to play and contribute.

Marcus Stoinis' knock of 124 will be etched forever in the minds of LSG as well as CSK fans. If Jos Buttler played an innings of bravado, what should one call Stoinis' knock? It's an open discussion, till then we call it a night!
