Hello, we’re back with another live blog, and it’s an important day for Indian cricket. The BCCI review meeting is underway in Mumbai, with several key issues on the agenda. Stay tuned for all the latest updates.
We’ve got some movement at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai! Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill have arrived for the review meeting, while chief selector Ajit Agarkar has joined the discussions virtually.
The meeting is now underway, with India’s recent performances, player fitness and the roadmap to the 2027 ODI World Cup among the key talking points.
The BCCI review meeting is expected to focus on India’s recent overseas struggles, recurring injury concerns and the fitness timelines of key players, including Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. The roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup, player workloads, selection priorities and coordination between the selectors, coaching staff and Centre of Excellence are also likely to be discussed.
India’s disappointing run in Ireland and England is likely to be closely reviewed, with the team’s planning, combinations and consistency under scrutiny ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The growing injury list is another major concern, with Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy and Washington Sundar among those to have suffered setbacks in recent months. Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan also missed the Sri Lanka Tests despite being picked subject to fitness, while Bumrah, Washington, Rana and Reddy have again been selected subject to fitness for the Afghanistan T20Is.
The BCCI’s high-powered review meeting in Mumbai has reportedly concluded. Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman were among those involved in the discussions, which focused on India’s recent performances, injury concerns and preparations for upcoming assignments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill have now left the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai after the review meeting. Ajit Agarkar attended virtually, while VVS Laxman and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia remain at the venue.
Saikia is expected to speak to the media soon, with more details on the meeting and its key takeaways likely to emerge.
VVS Laxman has also left the BCCI headquarters. According to Hindustan Times sources, the BCCI is unlikely to hold an official press briefing, with more details expected to emerge from reporters at the venue over the next few hours. Stay tuned.
VVS Laxman, Director of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), will take charge of India’s men’s cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Rohit Sharma remains a key 2027 World Cup consideration given his experience and proven ODI record. He has 11,895 ODI runs, 34 centuries, three double-centuries and the format’s highest individual score of 264. At the 2019 World Cup, he smashed a record five centuries. His recent 138 at Lord’s also showed he can still produce match-defining innings, though selectors must weigh his age and long-term consistency.
No press conference is expected after the meeting, with the board likely to keep its discussions and decisions under wraps for now. We’ll continue tracking developments and bring you any significant updates as they emerge.
He has praised Rohit Sharma, saying the veteran is:
"He is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators."
It's a positive sign for his India future. Saikia also confirmed there will be no Director of Cricket, while Ajit Agarkar’s tenure was not discussed as the chief selector was away.
The BCCI secretary says, “Players are having injuries because they have to play a lot of matches. If you look at their schedule, in England, we had a 15-player team that went for the ODIs, and out of that, 3 or 4 players got injured. We have to take into consideration that they have played two months of IPL prior to that. So all this takes a toll on the health of the players. To avoid those kinds of situations under the present FTPs, we are trying to find some ways out. We have a protocol in place for how a player can come back to international matches after injury. We are taking feedback from the captains and head coach to chalk up a proper strategy to avoid these unwanted situations. In the next FTP, we will ensure proper rest for the players, acclimatisation, or some practice matches before any major series in SENA countries.”
Thanks for joining.
