Heavy Rainfall And Thunderstorms Lashes Tamil Nadu, Schools Closed In 5 Districts

Rainfall and thunderstorms have hit Tamil Nadu after a heated summer this year, India Meteorological Department predicts mild rainfall to continue. Schools are closed in five districts on Monday.

Several districts of Tamil Nadu woke up to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms this morning which led to the concerned authorities declaring a holiday for schools on Monday.

Tamil Nadu witnessed severe heat over the past few days and this rain in several districts has definitely brought relief to the people. 

Five districts have declared schools to be closed for today including Chennai and its neighbouring districts of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, besides Vellore and Ranipet.

Flights departing from Chennai airport and around 10 flights arriving there were diverted to Bengaluru, reportedly. Flights that came from Doha an Dubai were among the ones diverted today.

According to the reports, the weather office forecast more spells of rain for the city and its suburbs on Monday.

Reportedly, the India Meteorological Department said that Meenambakkam recorded 137.6 mm rainfall from 8.30 am on Sunday to 5.30 am on Monday.

According to the reports, the Automatic rain gauges ( ARGs) in Taramani and Nandanam recorded nearly 12 cm of rainfall followed by Chembarambakkam with 11 cm of rain.

IMD on its bulletin has alerted several places in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu for thunderstorms, they said, "Thunderstorm & lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area."

For June 19, the IMD predicted heavy rainfall in several places in Tamil Nadu, it said, "Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur & Perambalur districts of Tamilnadu."
