‘The Reason We Lost Is The War’: JD Vance Blames Iran Conflict For Republican Midterm Defeat

US Vice-President JD Vance has blamed President Donald Trump’s war with Iran for the Republican Party’s sweeping losses in the November 3 midterm elections, saying voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 switched their support to Democrats because of the conflict. In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, Vance wrote: “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

Vance’s remarks came after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, making significant gains in states that had backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The vice-president said Republican turnout had not collapsed, but argued that many supporters who turned out had voted against the party.

He said polling cited by a Republican data analyst had shown that former Trump voters were angry and considering voting for Democrats. According to Vance, a pollster asked these voters what would persuade them to return to the Republican camp. Their leading responses were ending the war, addressing the cost of living and inflation, putting “America First”, and changing the US relationship with Israel.

Vance Says Iran War Drove Trump Voters Away From Republicans

Vance argued that the Republican defeat was not primarily a turnout problem, but a failure to retain voters who had supported the party two years earlier. Citing Florida as an example, he said the electorate there was nine percentage points more Republican than Democratic, only slightly less favourable to Republicans than in 2024.

He also acknowledged that the party’s economic messaging may not have been strong enough during the final stretch of the campaign. However, he described opposition to the Iran war as the central reason for the losses, pointing to the pollster’s account of voters who had abandoned the party. The polling details and the claimed responses were presented by Vance; he did not identify the pollster or publish the underlying survey data.

Vance also defended conservative commentator Rachel Campos-Duffy, who had called for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, saying her advice had proved politically sound. He warned against attempts within the Republican Party to explain the defeat through other issues, including immigration policy, and criticised proposals to offer amnesty to undocumented immigrants.

Trump Defends Iran War Despite Republican Setback

Vance’s comments followed Trump’s remarks on Tuesday night, when the president acknowledged that the Iran conflict had contributed to the Republican losses but defended the decision to launch the military campaign. Trump told The Wall Street Journal that he had “done the right thing” and would have made the same decision again, according to Reuters.

The vice-president’s statement marked a public distancing from the administration’s defence of the war. He questioned whether the conflict had been worth the political cost, pointing to the loss of control of the Senate and House.

The war began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. An April ceasefire halted the major fighting, but negotiations have not produced a lasting settlement. The conflict has also disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and contributed to concerns over energy prices and the cost of living.

Vance ended his post by urging Republicans to acknowledge voters’ concerns and rebuild support, saying any honest discussion about the party’s future must begin with the reasons voters turned away.
