In its first launch of the year, North Korea fired off an apparent ballistic missile towards its east in the sea that flew 1,100 kilometers (685 miles) before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, reports said. The Defense Ministry in Tokyo said the missile had splashed down just several minutes after its launch was announced. Japan's Defence Ministry said the missile landed outside its exclusive economic zone and that there were no reports of damage to vessels or aircraft. South Korea's military also confirmed it had detected an unidentified ballistic missile fired toward the Sea of Japan, news agency AP reported.
