Four artworks, including three surviving panels of the 1473 San Gregorio Polyptych, were stolen from the MuMe Regional Museum in Messina.
A group of three or four thieves reportedly breached the museum by bending fence bars, forcing open a side door and breaking an armoured display case.
Italian authorities suspect the theft was commissioned and have tightened checks around the Strait of Messina to prevent the artworks from being taken out of the country.
