A team of two Indian burn specialists and two nursing professionals landed in Dhaka on Wednesday to assist with the treatment of victims from the July 21 Bangladesh military plane crash, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The team hails from two of India's leading burn treatment centers in New Delhi. It includes Dr. Ram Mohan from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Dr. Piyush Thayal from Safdarjung Hospital. They are joined by nursing assistants Puneet Sharma and Anita Verma, both from RML Hospital, reported PTI.
Dispatched following an announcement by the MEA on Tuesday, the medical team will be in Bangladesh for about a week. They have been tasked with assisting in the comprehensive assessment and treatment of those injured in the crash and have carried necessary medicines with them.
According to a statement from the ministry, "They will make an assessment of the condition of patients with recommendation for further treatment and specialised care in India as necessary."
The team is also expected to assist the Bangladesh government with required health measures and will report their findings to the MEA and the Directorate General of Health Services upon their return. The MEA also noted that "additional medical teams may also follow depending on their preliminary assessment and treatment."
The medical assistance follows an expression of support from India's highest office. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and support, stating in a post on X: “Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka.
Our hearts go out to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance.”
