‘India, Russia Work In Virtually Every Area’: Putin On Meeting With Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday. The high-level meeting serves as a central engagement of the minister's two-day official visit to Russia. The ongoing diplomatic visit reviews the strategic framework between New Delhi and Moscow.

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that India and Russia continue to work in virtually every area – at the government level, through interparliamentary ties and between business communities.

Jaishankar Meets Putin In Moscow

Putin received Jaishankar in Moscow, where he said that the latter’s visit underscores the level of relations that Russia and India have built over many decades.

A statement on Telegram quoted Putin as saying, “I am pleased to note that our trade has grown this year. It declined slightly in 2025, but is now rising again. This is due in no small part – perhaps above all – to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally pays close attention to the development of Russian-Indian relations.”

He also conveyed regards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hoped to see him soon as planned on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation events. He further said they may meet again later this year given their schedules.

Jaishankar and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Denis Manturov, who chairs the Russian Side of the Intergovernmental Commission, have already had productive discussions and covered a broad range of important issues. Such issues comprise of not just energy supplies, but also fertilizer deliveries.

The statement said Russia is doing everything necessary to meet the needs of Indian farmers and agriculture, increasing these supplies and ready to continue doing so. All other matters – including nuclear energy, cooperation in high-tech sectors and other areas – are also on the agenda, and all are making steady progress.

India-Russia Economic Cooperation On Agenda

Jaishankar, while speaking to Putin, said he has a ‘good report’ to give after the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission. He said, “I think our economic cooperation, trade, energy, fertilizers, nuclear, and other dimensions as well, I'd be pleased to speak about them in detail. Overall, I think our economic cooperation has grown very significantly.”

Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Moscow to hold talks with his Russian interlocutors on a range of issues, including bilateral trade and investment ties.

Along with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, Jaishankar co-chaired a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC). Jaishankar also met Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and exchange perspectives on regional and global issues, according to an official statement.

The commission's previous session was held in Moscow on August 20, 2025, when Jaishankar co-chaired the 26th IRIGC-TEC with Manturov. Discussions at that meeting included addressing tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, removing logistics bottlenecks, improving connectivity and payment mechanisms, and advancing the Programme of Economic Cooperation until 2030.
