Christa Pike's execution in Tennessee could not be completed after two doses of pentobarbital were administered, following the US Supreme Court's decision to allow the procedure to proceed.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom she killed when she was 18.
The case has drawn attention to the execution of women and the death penalty for crimes committed by young offenders, while Pike's lawyers have challenged aspects of her sentencing.
