Cha Eun Woo's secret surveillance allegations are being investigated by police in Seoul after a woman in her 50s was accused of placing listening devices beneath a café table while the singer and actor was having a private conversation. The woman was reportedly caught when she returned to the café, with police now examining what the devices may have captured.
According to Sportschosun, the woman allegedly placed listening devices at a café in Seoul’s Yongsan District during two separate visits in August. Cha Eun Woo was reportedly present on both occasions while speaking privately with an acquaintance.
Police believe the first incident took place on August 23, followed by another visit on August 29. Reports have said that five devices were allegedly installed across the two occasions. Investigators are examining the equipment to establish whether it was capable of recording conversations and whether any private discussion was actually captured.
The woman was reportedly booked by Yongsan Police Station for an alleged violation of South Korea’s Communications Secrets Protection Act.
The woman was reportedly emergency-arrested after returning to the café but was later released after prosecutors did not approve the arrest. She is now being investigated without detention.
Her mobile phone has also been taken for forensic examination. Police are reportedly looking into how she obtained the devices, whether anyone else was involved and what she intended to do with any material that may have been recorded.
Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive and are continuing to establish the circumstances of the alleged surveillance. No confirmation has been given that Cha Eun Woo’s conversation was successfully recorded.
Cha Eun Woo, 29, is best known as a member of ASTRO and for his acting work in K-dramas including True Beauty, A Good Day to Be a Dog and Wonderful World. His recent Netflix series The Wonderfools, co-starring Park Eun Bin, was released earlier this year.
The actor is currently completing South Korea's mandatory military service and is serving as part of a military band. The privacy investigation comes while he remains away from the entertainment industry during his service.
