We too were once Gen Alpha. The schools of our time had facilities straight out of the age of Adam, leaking roofs during the monsoon, broken furniture, no computers, no proper laboratories and no clean toilets. We did not even know what smart classes were. What we did have was reverence for our teachers and the regular 'blessings' delivered in the form of corporal punishment. Yet, instead of taking our school’s problems to the streets, we trusted our headmaster, and our grievances were heard as well. In contrast, the picture of government schools in Uttar Pradesh today has undergone a radical transformation. Operation Kayakalp has brought these schools up to a level where they can compete with private schools in terms of education and facilities. There may certainly be problems at some places, but instead of informing their parents and trying to get the school management to resolve them, children directly taking to the streets and staging protests suggests that there may be another story behind it.

Normally, a schoolchild’s world is confined to classrooms, playgrounds, examinations and homework. Even when children have grievances against the school administration or the system, these are usually resolved through parent-teacher meetings (PTMs), applications submitted to the principal, or parental intervention. Schoolchildren generally do not take to the streets shouting slogans over their problems, nor do they insist on summoning top officials such as the District Magistrate directly to the spot. Yet, in recent days, the manner in which minor schoolchildren in some parts of Uttar Pradesh have taken to the streets, staged protests and demanded that administrative officials come to the spot is highly unusual. This situation is not merely surprising; it points towards the possibility of a deeper political conspiracy.
Unusual Protests and a Changing Pattern
Minor children organising themselves to block roads, raising slogans with banners and posters, and putting forward demands in the manner of seasoned protesters cannot, by any measure, be considered normal behaviour. Children between the ages of 12 and 16 generally do not possess the administrative understanding or strategic ability to insist on the presence of the highest district-level official. When children say, “We will not leave the road until the DM himself comes,” the language does not appear to be their own. It sounds like language taught to them by an experienced protester or a strategist operating behind the scenes. Clearly, there appears to be someone pulling the strings from behind the curtain and using these children like puppets.
Exploiting Innocence and the Politics of a 'Human Shield'
In a vast and sensitive state like Uttar Pradesh, placing innocent children at the forefront of protests points towards a dangerous trend. There could be two principal objectives behind it. First, to generate sympathy and put pressure on the administration. When young children sit on roads, the hands of the police and administration are effectively tied. The police can neither use force nor adopt a tough stance. The children are used strategically as a 'human shield' to create moral pressure on the administration. Second, the media and narrative game. Images of children crying, raising slogans and sitting on roads are extremely easy to exploit in the media and on social media. This can immediately damage the image of the state government and local administration.
Concrete Reasons to Suspect a Conspiracy
If these protests were limited merely to local school-related issues (such as fee hikes, shortages of teachers or infrastructure problems), their character would also be localised. However, the presence of a similar pattern in these protests, the sudden mobilisation of crowds, the use of printed posters and the rapid coverage on social media make the argument that these are spontaneous movements difficult to accept. There could be several vested interests behind them. At times, children are used as pawns in struggles for dominance involving school management, trusts or local politics. However, given the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the strongest possibility is that this could be a planned yet concealed political effort to destabilise the government and administration. It is an attack in which the instigators stand to win either way. In other words, these protests can create a narrative that the government has no concern for basic schools or the future generation. And if the administration uses force against children blocking roads or staging protests, angry parents could also be provoked into joining the agitation.
The Adverse Impact on Childhood and Education
Those who are attacking the government from behind schoolbags have become so blinded by their vested interests that, in the entire exercise, they are causing the greatest harm to the innocent children who should have been sitting in classrooms to study. When children are made part of protests, road blockades and confrontations with the administration at a young age, it can have a negative impact on their mental development. Unknowingly, they may begin to develop a tendency towards defying the law and adopting aggressive behaviour, which could be extremely damaging to their future.
Need for Investigation and Strong Action
The Uttar Pradesh government and the state police administration should not dismiss this matter merely as an ordinary student movement. There should be a thorough and impartial investigation into which organisations, political elements or individuals are active behind these children. Who is providing the resources for the protest banners, loudspeakers and transportation? Are the children being brought onto the streets through intimidation, inducement or manipulation? If an investigation establishes that children are being used to advance a political or personal agenda, the concerned elements should face the strictest possible action under the relevant provisions of child-protection laws and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In a democracy, every citizen has the right to raise their demands. But using innocent schoolchildren as shields to advance such demands cannot be acceptable under any circumstances. It is essential that the 'masterminds' behind these unusual protests by schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh are exposed so that the childhood and education of the state’s children, as well as law and order, can remain protected.
