Higher Education, Higher Quality: Expanding School Network In Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, higher education reform extends far beyond simply increasing the number of institutions. The state now has a holistic model that opens up new avenues for quality education, research, and innovation. This ensures access for students from every region of Uttar Pradesh. The state is modernising universities and enhancing their competitive edge to elevate its status as a leading hub for higher education.

Growing Opportunities

Uttar Pradesh now has 26 government universities, 57 private universities, one deemed university, and one open university. It also has 249 government colleges, which are expanding higher education opportunities. This includes 78 newly built government colleges.

New avenues for higher education are opening for students near their home regions in cities including Saharanpur, Azamgarh, Aligarh, Moradabad, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Prayagraj, and Lucknow.

This expansion is not limited to just building new campuses. Opening universities and colleges outside major cities reduces the travelling need of students for higher education. It also boosts local academic activities, research, and employment opportunities.

Winning Recognition

Uttar Pradesh’s expanding network of institutes focuses on higher education quality. In UP, 20 state universities now hold NAAC accreditation, strengthening the state's national presence. The number of state universities in the NIRF rankings was at an abysmal low of zero in 2017; it has now shot to nine in 2025.

This expansion of institutions in Uttar Pradesh has also gained global recognition. Nine universities from the state are featured in the QS rankings. This rising presence highlights improved educational quality and competitive strength.

Education For Future

Modern higher education must offer more than just degrees. It must prepare students for research, technology, innovation, and the needs of a changing job market. Because of this, universities are emphasising modern curricula and a strong research culture.

Quality higher education must expand across all the regions of the state for its large youth population. Local access to quality universities makes continuing education easier for students. This is a must for youth from villages, small towns and cities who face difficulties moving to major cities.

First, the network of institutions and colleges in Uttar Pradesh is expanding. Second, there is a focus on meeting stringent national and global quality standards. The growing presence of the state’s institutions in NAAC accreditation, NIRF rankings, and QS rankings point to this stunning progress.
